1956 Diamond T FACTORY 4x4 model 431 with 4x4 conversion by FABCO conversions in Oakland ca. The Holy Grail of All Holy grails. Diamond T did not make conventional cab 4x4 trucks..... much like Ford, Gmc and others they farmed out the trucks to the likes of MARMON HERRINGTON AND NAPCO.... Bell systems telegraph made a small order of vehicles in 1956 requiring Diamond T chassis with pole setter bodies and 4 wheel drive.
When that order was put into motion..... a page in 4 wheel drive history was written. These are the only conventional cab 4x4 Diamond T trucks known to have been built. Ever. I went to great lengths to aqquire the correct pole setter bod, pole settter A frame, and pole setter winch assembly. It is bolted to a roller frame to easily Be pulled onto a trailer for transport. The assembly was kept completely bolted together.... no maze of a million pieces. The body bolts on.... the A-frame bolts on.... the winch bolts on. That's it. You're in biz. The truck still has its orig winch attached... so you have 2.
Fabco is still in business .... so getting parts for the front axle is a breeze. However it is my belief that these axles need nothing more than wheel cylinders to be ready...
Engine, cab etc are all international.... diamond t sourced their parts from IH. Which aagain makes parts easy to get both new and used. All of the Diamond t specific parts are there.
My plan was to rebuild carb, put in new gas tank, install electric fuel pump, and get the motor up and running again .... as it turns free and is not stuck
Additionally clutch is functioning properly
Brakes are available at napa for this set up... master... wheel cylinders. Etc.
As much as I want to see this restored to original as a pole setter.... I would be remiss if I didnt mention that the rear mounted winch and short frame make this truck ideal for the most mind bending 50's era 4x4 Holmes wrecker anyone has ever seen. Something to dream about as you consider the purchase.
