1977 Oldsmobile 442 BLACK & GOLD 71K LOW MILE SURVIVOR 5.7L 350ci Additional Info:

What is better than a BARN FIND ? A true SURVIVOR that has been stored in a humidity and temperature controlled garage by a ONE OWNER family for 46 years. That original paint, lovingly cared for 442 is being offered "FOR SALE" to the public for the first time today. READ BELOW for major NASCAR history of this model.
Used as a Sunday and Weekend Car, never daily driven since its original purchase, this 442 stands the test of time with flying colors ! Literally the most desired Black & Gold color scheme ... (Hurst Olds Vibes?)
Owned by two brothers and handed down between the two, this car has been in the same family stable since 1977.--------------------------------------------------------VIN: 3G37R7M245900ODOMETER: 71,477--------------------------------------------------------
It has the most desirable 5.7L 350ci 4bbl engine option offered for 1977. Although the new Oldsmobile 403ci 4bbl was offered in 1977 this has not turned out to be a highly desirable power plant. Thankfully, this owner checked the box for the beloved 350ci Olds Rocket with four barrel carb.--------------------------------------------------------
By 1977, most of GM’s A-bodies had given up any sporting pretension. Chevrolet quit slapping the SS name on its Chevelle and Malibu, and even the shovel-nose, aero-slick Laguna was gone by 1977. The original GTO was just a distant memory by then. Buick’s GS program had quietly fizzled out as well. The Oldsmobile 442 retained its aero nose from 1976, while its not so sporty siblings the Supreme and "S" Coupe were produced for 1977 with a square nose. This was a serious NASCAR racing nod. One of the best and most notable styling attributes features this aerodynamic sloped nose and split grille.
In the mid-1970s, Oldsmobile was selling its midsize Colonnades in industry-leading numbers, and the sporty W29 4-4-2 Appearance and Handling Package was still an available upgrade for the Cutlass "S" Coupe. Though a super high-performance powertrain wasn't included, the option delivered the much-lauded FE2 Rallye suspension, featuring higher-rate front and rear springs, larger-diameter front anti-roll bar, rear anti-roll bar, firm ride shocks, and 15 x 7-inch wheels. It also added a special body-side paint treatment with billboard "442" callouts, "442" decal on the decklid, and Y74 bright rocker panel and wheel opening moldings. The FE2 suspension with the larger wheels results in fast, surefooted cornering that really is a pleasure.
While Olds' Cutlass enjoyed a banner year in 1977 worth close to a million units produced, there was only roughly 40k "S" Coupes and only 11k of those were 442's. Even less in production is the Black and Gold Olds 442 which out of a million cars is just a handful. To find one in survivor shape maintained well since since new, is almost impossible.
1977 was the last year of the Colonnade style Cutlass, which premiered with the ’73 model, and it did have a good looking body to add the 442 trim to.--------------------------------------------------------
The seller describes this 442 as being original, and there is a lot of paperwork that goes along with the car. It is pictured here with original sales envelope, owners manual and assorted provenance.
This car starts, drives and stops as would be expected from a car with only 71k miles. It does everything it is supposed to in a way that it should ... no complaints, here.
Photos are provided here from underneath. The floors and trunk are solid and this is not a weathered car. This car drives nice and looks excellent. It is missing a piece of rubber bumper filler from a brittle aging on the rear driver side, but outside of that, the car is really amazingly kept.--------------------------------------------------------

NASCAR HISTORY:
The 1977 Oldsmobile played a major role in the Winston Cup NASCAR series in 1978 and for a few years thereafter. This was the pinnacle of oval track racing, before cars were restricted. This was literally back when racing was "REAL" ... One the most "storied" drivers in NASCAR history drove the "11" Junior Johnson built 1977 Oldsmobile 442 to win the Winston Cup in 1978. That racer was none other than Cale Yarborough. In 1978 Cale won "10" (ten) races and set "8" pole positions in qualifying in his 1977 Olds 442. I have included two pictures of him in that car with two different paint schemes. Cale won the Winston 500 at Talladega that year and also crashed his 77' Olds 442 in the final lap of Daytona 500 with Bobby Allison. That resulted in one of the most remembered on track fights and a defining public relations moment for NASCAR. The 442 "11" car has become an icon in racing history. Every kid in 1976-1980 had a Hot Wheel Race Car with this aero slant nose body design. This is the last Colonnade car like this. Also Buddy Baker raced the 1977 Olds 442 in the 1980 Daytona 500 and set the average lap speed record at a speed of 177.602 mph. The record stands to this day. Baker’s iconic "Gray Ghost" 442 is now on display in the NASCAR Hall of Fame. I included a pic here.--------------------------------------------------------
