THE CAr
Very rare 1940Oldsmobile Series 60 “Woodie” Station Wagon, according to the Oldsmobile Club onlythree original models believed to exist. It’s “in great driving condition, alloriginal including the wood and engine, as restored in 1982.” The woodiecontinues to present very strongly in the photos, with small blemishes arisingfrom age and stone nicks in the paint work. This car was featured in “ClassicCars Woodies, A National Treasure” published in 1997.
It has always beengaraged and never driven in the rain since purchased.
POWERTRAIN
The 230-cu.in.L-head inline-six Oldsmobile engine with 6:1 compression was rated at 75horsepower at 3,200 rpm when new, mated to a three-speed manual transmissionproviding power to the rear wheels. The engine is said to be original and isbelieved to have been rebuilt during the 1982 restoration. The car is noted tostart and idle fine, with “a little smoke if it has been standing for longerthan a month.” The column-shifted transmission is also stated to be fine,noting a non-synchromesh first gear. A “small amount” of oil is identifiedunder the car.
A new battery hasbeen installed.
EXTERIOR
The Egyptian Ivoryfinish dates to the 1982 restoration the paint as in “good driver condition.”Several nicks are seen in the photos, as well as pitting on the polished trimother than the bumpers. The Originalwhite ash and walnut birch Hercules wood body appears to continue to presentsolidly and appears well maintained. A crack is identified in the left side reardoor window which is flat glass. I’m trying to replace it. No seal damage orleaks are reported. All lights work perfectly Very small areas of rust can beidentified on the wing.
NTERIOR
The heavily texturedbrown vinyl seats appear to present in very good condition, with two smallcracks noted in the driver’s seat and several blemishes on the end and back ofthe front seat. The seat adjustment handle is detached but is in the glove box.The painted woodgrain dash, gauges, and controls appear complete. No issueswith the gauges are reported.
The interior wood presents well, with chipping of the veneer near some edgesand corners. The underside of the roof presents very strongly, with a workingdome light. All plated hardware appears complete, although the plastic trimdisplays heavy deterioration. The contoured flooring is a mix of new and original materials, citingthat the rear mats could be replaced. There is a heater that is not working asit was detached during it’s life in California, but no radio exists.
CHASSIS
There’s “no play” inthe steering, which “drives straight.” Suspension service is unknown, while allbushings and shocks are reported to “seem fine.” The brakes are noted to be“fine.” No modifications have been made from original according to the seller.The original steel wheels and trim appear restored, with no reported vibrationsbut small blemishes 41 years later.
Heavy scuffing is onthe wide-whitewall tires, I will provide a $1000.00 credit towards new tires.in the sale.
DOCUMENTATION
This vehicle will besold on a clean Massachusetts title in my wife’s name. Letters and receiptsfrom the previous owner and some older photographs will also be provided in thesale. This rare 1940 Oldsmobile “Woodie” Station Wagon is one of 633 originallybuilt, according to production records. Information coming to the seller fromthe Oldsmobile Club of America identifies that only three original 1940Oldsmobile Station Wagons may exist. This Oldsmobile was included in the 1997bookClassic Cars - Woodies, A National Treasurewithtext, photos and design by Bill Yenne and reprinted by Barnes & Noble Booksin 2000 and will be included in the sale.
