1972 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme Convertible Additional Info:
At close range, its razor sharp overall appearance will prompt you to think that this 1972 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme Convertible appears positively museum worthy and that inclination would be right. This exceptional Olds had until recently held court at the Oldsmobile Transportation Museum in Michigan. Sporting its original engine and proudly displaying its original colors both inside and out, this car epitomizes what the term "clean classic" really means.
As a '72, this Cutlass benefited from a through restyling a few years before its debut that rendered it into a decidedly more trim and rugged muscle car and the net impact of the modifications that got it to that point resulted in a winning effort: the Cutlass Supreme was the best selling convertible in the entire country this very year. The Flame Orange shade draped over its exterior has a decidedly custom appearance but, having been skillfully resprayed a while back, represents its original factory color. Just as you'd expect from a car worthy of taking center stage on a museum turntable, the entire exterior is in absolutely top form. There's not a distracting blemish in sight, crystal clear glass surrounds the cabin and the entire array of chrome is in great shape. The factory issue color matched wheels are an effective styling cue, as well. Should you find yourself behind the wheel of this classic when the skies darken, the white convertible top powers into place with no issues and still has a showroom fresh appearance.
Also still dressed in its original color, the white vinyl interior on this Olds is just as impressive as its exterior. The extra wide bucket seats sport some nice detailing and remain well-padded, straddling a clean center console that provides welcome interior storage space. In back, the bench seat looks as if it's seen very few passengers, showing virtually no wear at all. The visual effect of the white upholstery contrasting with the black carpet lining the floor and the dash up front is a striking one. Just beyond the factory steering wheel perched on its column, the dash area remains in its original configuration and remains exceptionally fresh, with its fully functional gauges surrounded by woodgrain panels and a straight, uncracked dash on top. Unlike many drop tops of its era, this Cutlass left the assembly line with air conditioning on board, and it's in good form, too - converted to accommodate modern refrigerant, it blows strong and cold through the factory registers on the dash.
Lightly travelled during its extensive lifetime, this Olds is powered by a 350 cubic inch Rocket V8, one of the most coveted engines of its era. Fed by a factory 4-barrel carb underneath a properly badged black air cleaner, the engine takes center stage in a compartment that holds to the same high standards of thoroughly pristine authenticity as the rest of the car and looks awesome in its gold painted block, heads, valve covers and intake. The 350 pairs with a smooth shifting 3-speed automatic TH350 transmission, so this Olds offers an outstanding driving experience. It sits on a suspension that features trailing arms in back, as opposed to the more commonly seen leaf springs, so the ride is nice and quiet. Power steering and power disc brakes provide easy navigation and low effort stops as this stellar classic rolls on its set of 14" color matched wheels wrapped in Hankook tires.
