1954 Oldsmobile Eighty-Eight -- Additional Info:

How great it is to come across a rarely seen classic that's been treated with such care over the years. This 1954 Oldsmobile 88 was already in solid shape even before its restoration and, against the odds, it's had the decided benefit of being a one-family car during its lifetime, so as its counterparts were being passed around and often maintained sparingly, if at all, it's received the attention befitting the treasured possession it is. The... 88 compiled quite a history in its early years. While its appearance in showrooms confirmed the notion that Oldsmobile had its styling thoroughly dialed in, the model was also racking up wins on the NASCAR circuit, reinforcing its "Rocket 88" theme while almost singlehandedly revitalizing its manufacturer's brand. Small wonder that a concerted effort has been made to retain this Oldsmobile's original appearance. It still wears the turquoise exterior and white roof it left the factory with and, having received a thorough refreshing, the paint really looks great. From the front grille and that signature rocket perched on the center of the hood, on back to the circular emblem on the deck lid, the assembly of chrome that's on board has all either been skillfully restored or replaced entirely. Precise, well aligned body alignment and the clear glass surrounding the cabin finish off this classic's vital appearance. The interior has been thoroughly refurbished in aqua and white for an authentic vintage look. There's a lot of attention to detail on display here - not only are both the front and rear bench seats and the door panels they're bracketed by in great shape, but even the pedestal below the front bench shows the effects of plenty of prep work with its smooth, uniform surface. A factory-correct, generously sized steering wheel sits on its column, and just beyond it the dash area is another definite high point, with its inspired vintage styling, generous use of chrome trim and a collection of factory gauges in the instrument cluster that not only are clear and readable, but also function just as intended. Even the original AM radio still sits at the center of the dash. The appearance of the trunk area is often an afterthought on even more through restorations, but it's another highlight here - the combination of the two-tone inner fenders, fresh turquoise carpeting and vertically mounted spare with its matching cover will no doubt bring a smile to your face. In keeping with the impressive condition of the rest of the car, the engine compartment is very well detailed and tidy and sports a 324 cubic inch Rocket V8 at its center that sits between the interior bracing with its sharply painted valve covers and compact black air cleaner, under which is a period correct 2 barrel carb. This Olds is no mere novelty suitable only for a turntable display, it's a strong driver as well. The Hydramatic transmission just behind the engine is shifting very smoothly, rounding out a very capable, road-ready drivetrain. The drum brakes at all four corners are also in good form, so stopping is reassuringly dependable. Below, the undercarriage looks very solid and from that vantage point you can see the X bracing at the midpoint to increase structural rigidity. This rare and very appealing classic rides on a set of 15" factory steel wheels that wear period correct whitewalls for a thoroughly vintage appearance. With its precise and authentic appearance and impressively strong running condition, this 1954 Oldsmobile 88 stands in very select company. Call today!
