1970 OLDSMOBILE Real Rally Red Dash Data Plate Special Ordered Paint 344 v.i.n. Numbers Matching Genuine 442 Opportunities like this don't come around very often. This is an extremely rare 1970 Oldsmobile 442 proven by the fact that the vehicle identification number starts with 344. I'm sure most 442 guyswill tend to agree that you rarely see an authentic special ordered dash paint code Rally Red Real 442 in original condition with this many factory options.
Mostly all of the 1970 muscle car models have shown to be the most highly sought after and desired year to acquire. 1970 was the pinnacle of the muscle car era. I was running out of daylight when I was shooting the body pictures, but I had to use those pictures or I couldn't have started the auction. This is the first time this Rally Red 442 has ever been offered to the public on eBay.
The prior owner of this Genuine 1970 442 was a gentleman who had owned this car since April 10th of 1971. This Real 442 was purchased brand new at Ladendorf Oldsmobile in Des Plaines, Illinois by a young man in the United States Marine Corps right after he came home from Vietnam. Apparently according to the owner who has had this car for the last 46 years acquired this 442 when the young Marine was called back into active service. He made the purchase when the car was only one year old. I was given the original classic Illinois title that the information was handwritten on the title's back then when Michael. J. Howlett was the Secretary of State in Illinois. I remembered these title's when I was growing up, but haven't seen one in over 30 years until I made this purchase. That exact original open, clean, and clear title pictured will be included in this sale.
I will explain everything I know about this real 442, so the lucky bidder who wins thisrare gemcan decide exactly what they would like to spendprior to placing their bid. I would estimate this car needing 20-30K invested to bringthis 442 upto thehigh endlevel that it deserves.
This Rally Red 442 does have the original Rocket 455/365 horsepower numbers matching engine. This engine does have the proper 396021 F casting numbers. The Quadrajet 7040258 carburetor is the correct number for a 1970 442 W-30 model. It has been sitting on a shelf rebuilt for many years. The carburetor was just placed on the engine to hold the factory original ram-air air cleaner set-up. I believe this 442 still has the original four core radiator, and mostly everything else that came on this engine when it rolled out of the factory onto the showroom floor back in 1970. Even a lot of the original factory old school clamps are on the hoses. This engine has not been started in over 38 years, so everything will have to be gone through. This 442 did come factory ordered with the air conditioning option. From what I can see all of the original air conditioning components are all in tact under the hood and still hooked up including the original a/c belt. Some of the other rare options are the rear defogger and the deluxe lighting group. The original 12-bolt positive traction rear end is the factory 3.23 posi with the original boxed control arms, and the original front and rear sway bars.
This 442 has the majority of its original Rally Red paint which is basically a version of bright orange. The sides of the car all have the original paint and pinstripes on them. The fenders on this carare the original flat gutter 1970 one year only 442 fenders. The doors are the original doors with the original door edge guards, and still feel like they open and close when this car was new. The rear quarter panels are also original to this body as I have seen no signs of any body work or replacement. The trunk lid had rust on the lip, so I replaced the trunk lid with a much nicer one that I happened to have. The chrome on the edge of the trunk lid is in very nice condition. A lot of times the trunk lid chrome is missing on these types of cars. I've had many Cutlass and 442's over the years,but have had very few that were ordered with the special ordered dash paint code. This is a rare find!
There were four special ordered colors in 1970. Agean Aqua, Sebring Yellow, Nugget Gold, and Rally Red. All of those special ordered colors have a dash on the data plate. This car has a dash and a D, because the D is for a black vinyl top. This 442 could actually be painted any four of the special ordered colors and whichever color is chosen would appear as an original body color because of the dash on the data plate. I think that Rally Red is the most desirable of all the special ordered colors which were only available on the Vista Cruiser, 442, Cutlass Supreme, Cutlass S, Cutlass, and F-85 model's available at an extra cost. If I were restoring this 442 I would keep it Rally Red. I've personally seen numbers matching 1970 442's painted Rally Red bring in excess of $100,000 dollars at live auction nearly every time one crosses the auction block. If you are going to restore one rare car in your lifetime you may as well make sure it is an extremely valuable model.
This 442 was ordered from the factory as a ram-air hood car, but the hood on the car is not original to this car. I was told the original hood was stolen when this car was parked in the 1980's. However the current hood is a genuine GM dual snorkled ram-air 442 hood. This ram-air hood will need extensive repair, but at least the car now has a ram-air hood to work with. Mostly every part for these cars are made in very nice aftermarket identical reproduction parts that are available at a wide variety of muscle car supply stores that specialize in the 442 models. An aftermarket replacement ram-air hood may be the best option when restoring this car. I don't want to sugar coat anything in this auction. This car will need a complete and full restoration where every part on this car will need to be repaired, restored, or replaced. The restoration will be expensive. The Chilton's 1970-1987 Cutlass/442 repair manual shown will be included with this sale. I'm sure the winning bidder will make good use of it.
Most of the original chrome is present including the rear cut-out back bumper. Both of the bumpers will need to be sent out and re-chromed or most parts suppliers do sell a pair for around $600 with nice triple plated chrome. The front and the rear floor pans are the originals and have never been replaced. There has been some shoddy patch work done. To restore this car properly I believe it should have all new floors. The carpeting is worn, but there is a nice set of fourblack carpetedfloor mats. The headliner and rear package tray will need to be replaced. The interior door panels and the rear back panels look a little weathered. They may be able to be restored, but those are also made in identical aftermarket replacements. The original AM radio is still in the dash. This dash was never cut up like was typically done back in the day to fit aftermarket stereo's.
This442 sits on a set of four Old School B.F. Goodrich Belted T/A raised white lettered tires withgood tread mounted on 14" inch Super Stock II wheels painted Argent Silver like they came from the factory in 1970. All four wheels have all four bolt-on center caps and all fourbeauty trim rings. In my opinion the original trunk floorwill need to be replaced, but still hasthe originaltrunk mat witha jack, jack stand,and crow bar. Also included in the trunk is a full size spare tire.
Included in the glove box is the 1970Oldsmobile 442 owner's manual and the 1970 Oldsmobileconsumer informationpamphlet all in the original 1970 Oldsmobile plastic dealer case. These older classics that have survived for over 40 years are becoming harder and harder to find.
The Nada Classic Car Price Guide currently hasa genuine1970 Oldsmobile442 with the 455/365 horsepower engine listed at $80,500 in high condition, which theyconsider an excellent overall vehicle that was completely restored, or an original vehicle showing very minimal wear. Note: This value does not represent a 100 point show car or a #1 vehicle. Those vehicles can reach much higher prices.
Nada has the average condition value at $53,590 which theyconsider in good overall condition that could be an older restoration or a well maintained original vehicle that is completely operable. The exterior paint, trim, and mechanics are presentable and serviceable inside and out.They say an average condition car is considered a20-Footer!
They have the lowest condition value at $34,500 being considered a deteriorated restoration or a very poor restoration, but mostly usable "As-Is!" The lowest value does not represent a parts car, but would be considered as the price for a car needing a complete restoration.

I know there are die-hard Olds guys out there that would be willing to pay $10,000 just for the title and tags on a rare car like this, but I would prefer to see a car this hard to find Real Rally Red 442 be restored. The 70-72 Oldsmobile 442muscle cars are the finest handling cars I have ever driven. There is no finer muscle car on the planet in my eyes than the 1970-1972 Oldsmobile Cutlass and 442 model years.
