"The newyear the convertible is vastly improved with the addition of a 3.4-liter, 200-horsepower V-6 engine as an option. A 3.1-liter, 140-horsepower V-6 had been the only power plant available since the car appeared in the 1990 model year.

We test-drove the convertible with its new engine teamed with a four-speed automatic transmission at Oldsmobile`s preview of its 1993 lineup in cowboy country. Oldsmobile chose Oklahoma City because it is the site of its Cutlass Ciera assembly plant, recently rated the auto industry`s No. 1 plant in production quality.

The 3.4-liter engine`s 60 extrahorsepowerfeels like twice that much. The beauty of the engine is that it packs a punch while running quietly.

The``noise`` Cutlass Supreme convertible owners want to hear is that of the wind rustling through their hair, not cams, pistons or valves piercing their ears.

In response to complaints from owners that the 3.1 was a bit loud, Oldsmobile quieted both engines by altering the exhaust system.

However, with the new engine you don`t operate in a sound vacuum. Step on the pedal and there`s some built-in exhaust rumble, a reminder from Oldsmobile that you have 200 horsepower at your disposal.

But not too much rumble. In response tocomplaints.

ADVERTISEMENTfrom owners that the 3.1 was a bit loud, Olds quieted both engines by altering the exhaust system. The Cutlass Supreme convertible keeps the pluses it had before the 3.4 arrived-an easy-to-lower power top; seating for four adults; attractive styling, despite the roll-bar roof line; a road-hugging suspension; a thick steering wheel for the feeling of driver control; and available anti-lock brakes ($450). Sadly, there is no air bag.

That added shot of power in the new engine will cost you inmileage. The 3.4 is rated at 17 m.p.g. city/26 highway, while the 3.1 is rated at 19/29. Of course, if mileage is your chief concern, why would you spend about $25,000 on a midsize convertible?

Oldsmobile General Manager John Rock, one of the most brutally blunt executives around, said of the Cutlass Supreme convertible: ``It`s the only Olds that people stand in line for and pay near sticker to have.`` It`s also the only car in the Oldsmobile lineup that doesn`t offer incentives.

Oldsmobile will sell about 4,000 of the convertibles in the 1992modelyear and expects to attract 7,500 buyers for 1993 now that the new engine is available.

The numbers are low, and in most places demand exceeds supply for the only convertible on the market that you can get four adults in without bending, folding or spindling the unfortunate two designated to ride in back. The midsize Cutlass Supreme is built on a 107.5-inch wheelbase and is 193.9 inches long, and none of that size is sacrificed to handle the soft top.

The 3.4-liter V-6 is included in a $995 package that adds a beefed-up suspension, a folding console in the back seat, a rear-deck spoiler, dual exhausts, 16-inch aluminum wheels and P225/60R16 steel-beltedperformanceradial tires.

The base price is $22,699. Standard equipment includes air conditioning, four-wheel power disc brakes, power steering, a center console with cup holder, side-window defoggers, power door locks (new for `93), deluxe pile carpeting, digital instrumentation, dual remote mirrors, body-coloredmoldings, an AM/FM stereo with cassette player and digital clock, four-wheel independent suspension, power windows and tinted glass.

For $245 you can add steering-wheel touch controls for the air conditioner and radio, and for $170 you can add a rear defroster for the glass window in the vinyl top.

The Cutlass Supremeconvertibleis worth standing in line for."
