In 1970, Oldsmobile introduced a new Cutlass Supreme option called the SX Performance Package. The Y-79 option featured several 455 V8 engine options, a 400 TH Transmission, a cutout rear bumper with dual exhaust, special SX badges on the fenders and other goodies not found on a standard Cutlass Supreme. Order the right options and you had a 442 in disguise, and avoided the high muscle car insurance premiums. At minimum you would own a rare muscle car that would only last until 1971.

The SX455 Club is the official resource for all things Olds Cutlass SX. Since 2005, we have been registering as many SX cars as possible and documenting everything there is to know about these rare muscle cars.

In 1970, there were three 455 engine options for the Cutlass SX. In 1971, there was only one Cutlass SX engine. These engines offered up to 365hp and 510lbs of torque!

The production numbers for this two-year-only model are less than half of the highly collectable 442 models, plus many of the Cutlass SX cars were sent to the junk yard crusher before the car became collectable. Finding or seeing a Cutlass SX is rare, even at the largest Oldsmobile Club of America annual nationals meet.

The Cutlass SX is certainly a unique and rare General Motors muscle car, and will continue to gain in popularity and value as more collector car enthusiasts discover these great cars. Sophisticated styling, luxury options and big block performance make the Cutlass SX a great gentleman’s muscle car!
