A gentleman purchased this vehicle new from Earl Oldsmobile in Cleveland, Ohio. He drove it back-and-forth to Florida for a few years. Eventually this '58 was put away and rarely driven. The original owner passes away at sometime. Fast forward to 2006, his nephew sold the vehicle to the current owner. This person who is an Oldsmobile Club of America member removed the vehicle from storage and meticulously serviced the vehicle and got it roadworthy again. He went through the vehicle mechanically from top to bottom. Please read the description below for more details on what was done.
It's not everyday that you come across an original, low mileage classic vehicle in this type of condition. It is only original once!
Don't miss your opportunity to own this Super 88 Holiday Coupe.
1958 Oldsmobile Super 88 - Two-door Holiday Hardtop Coupe
Paint / Body:
We believe most of, if not all the paint is still original on this 33,446 mile vehicle. The paint is in excellent condition without any fading, scratches, checking, thin spots, orange peel, or bubbles. (Near perfect.) The factory colors are called "Victorian White" and "Champagne Mist Metallic". The factory paint codes are 90-91. (See photo of cowl trim tag.) The paint looks great with a deep shine. The vehicle only has a few very small chips that can be easily touched up. (See close-up photos at the end of the gallery.) The body is extremely solid, straight and rust free. The body panel fit and alignment looks good and are free of any door dings, dents or scratches. Both the doors close with ease. The factory weatherstripping is still in great condition and is not dry rotted. The vehicle still has its factory "T3" headlights installed. (All four of them are working fine.)
Chrome / Trim:
All of the chrome, stainless steel and emblem pieces are original! From what we understand, this vehicle never seen any winter weather. That being said, the chrome bumpers look great without any pitting or dulling. There is some very very minor peppering on some of the chrome taillight housings/fins. (To be honest, we didn't noticed anything until the owner said something. Even then, it was very hard see.) 1958 was the year of the chrome, and this vehicle has a lot of it. The stainless steel trim moldings are straight and without any major dings or scratches. The front grille along with the other pot metal items are in excellent condition and free of any pits or corrosion.
Interior:
Again, All original. The factory "Beige" (Trim Code 374) interior is in excellent condition. We didn't see any wear, fading, or other problems with the interior. This original interior looks almost like new. The door panels are also in great shape with no wear on the arm rests or handles. The factory beige padded dash doesn't have any cracks or other problems. The interior chrome, knobs, handles, and other trim pieces are all beautiful. The headliner looks nice, but is very delicate due to its age and type of material. It does have a few cracks in the material. The original carpet is clean and in great condition with no visible wear. It is not faded and stained. All of the electrical items were gone over and checked to make sure they were all working correctly. Lights, horns, gauges, radio, heater controls, wipers, turn signals, back up lights, etc.. The clock is the only item that currently doesn't work. The glove box area and ash trays even look new. The original owner's manual with the original dealership and owner's information is still in the glove box.
Engine Compartment:
The engine compartment still retains the original look right down to the correct hose clamps. The compartment houses the original 371 CID "Golden Rocket" V8 engine with the optional "J-2" 3 two-barrel carburetor setup. This 312 horsepower drivetrain has only 33,446 original miles. It starts, idles and runs great . It doesn't tick or smoke. You will be amazed on how nice this engine performs. It pulls very strong and sounds awesome. The tri-power carburetors have been rebuilt and are adjusted for peak performance.
You can't duplicate originality. This can be seen with all the correct finishes and components under the hood. Such as the correct J-2 air cleaner/cover, date coded generator, radiator, and all the correct clips and fasteners. The Jetaway Hydra-Matic automatic transmission shifts out nice and firm and does not slip. See the "Mechanical" section listed below to find out everything that was done to the vehicle once it was removed from storage. Under the hood still retains its original insulation.
Trunk Compartment:
Turn back the clock to 1958. Open the trunk lid and you will see what it looked like in '58. The original trunk pad material is in great shape. The new spare tire and wheel matches the other four that are on the car. The correct jack, jack stand, handle and jacking tools are all stored in their locations. Again, the trunk floor is solid and rust free. The trunk has a light that came with the accessory package option.
Glass:
The vehicle is equipped with factory tinted glass. All of the date coded glass pieces are original to the vehicle including the front windshield. The windshield is in great shape without and stone chips, cracks or wiper marks. The side windows roll up and down with ease and no problems. The vent windows operate as they should. The chrome and stainless steel trim pieces around the windows are excellent.
Wheels and Tires:
Stock original 1958 wheels along with the optional deluxe color accent wheel covers. They all are in great shape. No scratches or dents. Mounted on these stock wheels are the larger optional 9.00 x 14 whitewall Coker tires. (3,500 Miles on them.) The current owner installed these five(5) new tires when he was going over the vehicle after removing it from storage. The vehicle drives smooth, and straight without any vibrations, shakes or rattles.
Undercarriage:
The undercarriage is original, solid and rust free. The finish on this area is not original. The original owner painted the underside with "Red Oxide" paint. Even though it may have protected the underside, it didn't look stock. The current owner used black semi-gloss chassis paint to make it more like it did when it was original. A new aluminized dual exhaust systems was installed. (The original pipes had some pin holes.) While looking at the undercarriage photos, make sure to check out how nice the original rocker panels seams are.
Mechanical:
The vehicle was pulled out of storage in 2006. The current owner who is avid Oldsmobile Club of America member, and knows these vehicles very well, went through all the vital systems. Here is what was done to the vehicle:
The fuel system was completely gone through, Replaced the fuel pump, rubber fuel line and fuel float/sending unit.
The J-2 carburetors were reconditioned. The fuel tank was removed, cleaned and re-installed.
The cooling system was flushed and a new water pump, thermostat, hoses, heater hoses and belts were installed. The radiator was record.
Drained the old oil, removed oil pan to check and clean any old oil residue from inside pan.
New oil was added and then the car was driven for awhile and the oil was changed again.
The valve covers received new gaskets.
The brake system was flushed along with rebuilding the master cylinder, wheels cylinders.
The front brake shoes were replaced along with the rubber brake lines.
It received a new cap, rotor, points, plugs, and spark plug wires.
The dual exhaust system was replaced. Aluminized pipes and mufflers were installed. The heat riser was cleaned and lubed.
The transmission pan was removed, trans inspected. The filter and fluid was changed.
The fluid in the rear end was also changed. (3.23 Ratio)
The engine compartment received a correct looking Delco battery.
New shocks in the rear. The front still have the original spiral type shocks.
