1955 Nash Hudson Metropolitan Coupe Additional Info:
Just in time for spring and summer cruising: If you have ever considered getting a Metropolitan, check this one out! It is a 1955 Hudson "Met", one of the rare ones. The Metropolitan Pit Stop estimated that of about 95,000 Metropolitans sold in North America, only about 900 were badged as Hudsons, between the 1954 and 1957 model years. Most Mets had the Nash badge in those early years. After 1957 American Motors discontinued both the Nash and Hudson brands to focus on the more popular Ramblers. from 1958 through 1962 all Mets had a "M" logo on the grille.
So much for history. This Metropolitan is finished in its original colors, Canyon Red (more of a salmon or coral than red) with a Mist Grey top. It has some upgrades: the original 1200 cc engine has been replaced with a later 1500. It also has a disc brake conversion for better stopping power and an auxiliary electric fuel pump. A modern stereo has been added, plus backup lights and hazard flashers. These improvements make the car more suitable for driving in modern traffic while preserving the original appearance and charm inherent in these little classics.
One important thing when shopping for a Met: they are serious "rusters". Once rust takes a hold on these unit-bodied cars, things get ugly. It can cost thousands to get them right. This example came from the high desert region of California. Since I acquired it in 2013 it has always been garaged when not being used. So - no rust! All body panels are straight and free of dents. I have not found any evidence of accident damage or body repair on this car. Mileage shows 34,330; I have no idea what the actual total mileage is.
The interior is in very good overall condition. There are speakers in the doors which are hidden by the door covering fabric. The headliner is starting to come apart in the left rear corner so it should be replaced. I have a roll of extra fabric which goes with the car. Other than that, only a few things need attention:
The gas gauge doesn't work. The accessory oil pressure gauge under the dash doesn't work properly - probably a bad ground. There is a slight exhaust leak between the exhaust pipe and the manifold. Otherwise, all major systems work OK. Just keep in mind that this is a 61 year old car so don't expect it to drive like your Honda. But that's what the charm of driving a vintage vehicle is all about! It's different; you have to drive IT, it doesn't drive YOU. Due to the age of this vehicle I am selling it "as-is" with no warranties or guarantees expressed or implied.
Included with the car is a display board (see photo) which gets a lot of attention. I'm including some manuals and a tow bar as well. I hope my Met goes to a loving home and the new owner(s) become members of a great club, the Metropolitan Owners Club of North America (MOCNA). E-mail me with any questions.
