Presented for your consideration is a 1997 Mitsubishi Pajero Evolution (Not 1979) road-legal variant of the renowned Pajero Evolution Rally Car, manufactured from 1997 to 1999. While it was based on the second generation Pajero, this model boasted numerous distinctive features. A total of approximately 2,693 units were produced to meet the homologation requirements for the Dakar Rally's production-based T2 class. It is a rare car that has gained value due to its recent eligibility for importation into the United States under the 25-year rule.
Underneath its rugged exterior, this version of the Pajero Evolution was equipped with a powerful 3.5-litre 24-valve DOHC V6 6G74 engine, featuring MIVEC technology and a dual plenum variable intake system. This remarkable powertrain claimed an output of 275 bhp at 6,500 rpm[2][4][5]. The two-door body design was enhanced with prominent fender flares, two fin-like rear spoilers, a functional hood scoop, and several other styling elements inspired by racing aesthetics. Skid plates and mudflaps were thoughtfully integrated to provide additional protection during off-road adventures.
To ensure exceptional off-road performance, the Pajero Evolution boasted a double wishbone independent suspension at the front, while the rear utilized a unique multi-link independent suspension system specific to this model. Four-wheel drive was standard, complemented by front and rear Torsen differentials, delivering optimal traction and stability in various terrains.
This particular example is mechanically sound and has low mileage, making it highly desirable. Overall, the interior is in excellent condition, having been protected by seat covers. While the exterior does show some signs of aging, as depicted in the accompanying photographs, it still maintains an appealing appearance. It is a very original and unrestored car.
The current owner has owned this since 2011 after purchasing from Donnithorne Simms Mitsubishi in Christchurch, New Zealand. The selling dealer replaced the cambelt, water pump, and tensioners at 102,000 kilometers. This Evo has now done 131,750 kms or 82,343 miles. It is worth noting that these components may require attention again, considering the interval since their last replacement. Since then, the car has been part of massive collection and has been sparingly driven. The vehicle was also fully rustproofed at the time of purchase, providing an additional layer of protection against corrosion. This Evo is currently registered with a valid Warrant of Fitness in New Zealand.
