Here is some history about the 1979/1980 Limited Edition:
The 1979/1980 MGB Limited Edition was a marketing endeavor between B-L and the U.S. distributorship in Leonia, J to mark the end of new MGB sales in the North American Market. The production period of the North American version “LE” was 1979-1980. An agreement between British Leyland and the U.S distributorship insured that for all North America the “LE kit” would be only installed on black cars and to buy a black car of that time period, t had to be a Limited Edition only. In March 1979 British Leyland started the production of black painted limited edition MGB roadsters for the US market, eant for a total of 500 examples. Due to a high demand of the limited edition model, roduction ended with 6682 cars produced. The United Kingdom received bronze painted roadsters and a silver GT model limited editions. The production run of home market limited edition MGBs was split between 421 roadsters and 579 GTs.
In addition to the color specific exterior, umerous components are specific to the Limited Edition model. These items make the Limited Edition unique in comparison to standard MGB’s of 1979-80. Here’s a list of those components:
Front air dam L.E.
Five spoke alloy wheels, anufactured by GKN, ith MG hub center appliqués
Silver lower body stripes
Luggage rack
Leather covered, added, hree spoke steering wheel with a special center hub. This uses the same MG applique as the wheels
A "Limited Edition" dash plaque installed on the glove box
(As you can see in the pictures, LL of this are still present in the car)
The last MGB Roadster off the production line at Abingdon returned to Abingdon County Hall on 1 December 2011 with the help of British Motor Heritage. It was lifted up 30 feet through a first floor window of the Grade I listed building with inches to spare; and now forms part of the collection on display in the main gallery. The 1798 cc, cylinder engine produces about 65 horsepower and is matted to a four-speed manual gearbox. Hydraulic disc brakes are installed on the front with drum brakes on the rear.
This great car represents the refinement and culmination of the MGB series that began in 1963. As MG prices continue to rise, his is the time to add this reasonably priced classic to your collection.
