MG made some of the best enthusiast's cars of its day, but we bet you're a bit different than the usual MG customer. This 1957 MGA is the rarely-seen coupe model. It makes for more elegant lines and an even better sporting attitude. So while the roadster is great for open-top enthusiasts, you probably want this one because you're a true MG aficionado.
Roadsters are fun, but there's something special about a coupe. We love the look of the roof with its wraparound rear glass and a nice curve that seems to complement the rounded rear fenders. This example looks quite clean and complete with nice details like the sport wheels and shining chrome bumper against the silver paint. It's believed MG produced more than eight times the total number of 1500-series roadsters compared to the coupes, and only about 4800 ever came to America. And that rarity has only grown over the last seven decades. The value price for a less-seen classic like this reflects how this can leave some room in your budget if you want to refresh the paint, grille, or other details. However, we very much like the way this one looks right now. The coupes always seemed more like a track-ready car thanks to better aerodynamics and the added rigidity of a fixed roof. So this is the right one if you're looking for a track day car. Or even if you are just driving it on the streets, we bet the only addition you'd make is a few door and hood "gumballs" so you can add a racing number.
The clean black interior has the best of classic motoring with a banjo-style sports steering wheel, clear British Jaeger gauges, and the crisp action of the gearstick. It's driver-ready, and the bucket seats, center armrest, and newer carpeting all make it feel quite inviting. Another great reason to love the coupe is because the roadster still only had side curtains. So a nicely lined roof and roll-up windows give you a much greater sense of permanence here.
One of the big reasons why we like this one so much for a true driver is because of what's under the hood. The engine bay has a clean style that comes from a proper investment. The bold red block looks great against the exterior silver, and everyone loves the detailed style of the twin SU carbs. The upgraded 1600cc B-series motor is a robust powerplant. This was a popular motor in Europe, and parts are still easy to find and relatively inexpensive. And when a car is maintained to look this good, it also is kept correctly to be a strong runner. It even has a newer aluminum radiator. The undercarriage photos prove there was a proper investment in the places that really count (we also have the restoration photos.) It also makes for a car you can confidently enjoy. And the four-speed manual gearbox combines with the legendary nimble steering to let you feel why these are legendary back road roadsters.
The sale comes complete with resonation photos and thousands in build receipts. We love this for the rarity, style, and true vintage driving fun. So if you know the difference you get from an MGA in coupe form, then you know it's time to call today!
