Mercury Montclair Sun Valley is one of them. The year 1955 was the first for the marque"s new Montclair series, which corporate literature called its "luxury line with a sports car flair," noting it as the lowest, longest-looking Mercury ever released. Indeed, 1955 was a major changeover for all of Mercury"s products, introducing new styling and accessories. What set the Sun Valley model apart from its contemporaries was the unique Plexiglas acrylic-glass half roof, which extended back from the windshield framework and was tinted for glare reduction. As one of the highest-priced models in Mercury"s car line, just 1,787 Montclair Sun Valleys were produced in 1955, and they are not commonplace in today"s collector-car market. This example began as an Arizona car that has now received a concours-level restoration. Under the hood was the 292/195 HP Super-Torque V-8 engine, featuring a downdraft 4-barrel carburetor and standard-equipment dual exhaust. A Merc-O-Matic automatic transmission is behind that. Finished in crisp Springdale Green with complementary white roof accents, this Mercury features the desirable continental kit, fender skirts, the year"s new combined bumper-grille, script Montclair and Sun Valley chrome trim on both sides, centered hood ornamentation and the Mercury brand name spelled out across the hood"s leading edge. Inside, under the canopy of light, is a tri-tone vinyl interior featuring a bench seat, optional power windows, Full-Fidelity radio, Motochron clock and 4-way power seats. The crowning touch for this classic of the Jet Age are the chrome wire wheels with spinner capswhich feature a Mercury figurehead motifsurrounded by beautiful wide whitewall tires. Stunning in appearance inside and out, this Sun Valley is appealing with its "turnpike cruiser" 58.6-inch height, and it retains that classic feel of 1950s motoring.
