1939 Mercury 99A convertible coupe Convertible Additional Info:

1939 Mercury Convertible Sedan

This is my 1939 Mercury model 99A convertible sedan. This car has had a full frame off rotisserie restoration done at the very highest level.
This is the 1st year of Mercury and the convertible was the lowest production. The 39 Mercury looks very much like the Ford but actually is very different. These cars are much harder to find than the same vintage Fords, especially in this condition. This car came out of the Famous Dingman Collection, Mike Dingman, a 21-year veteran of Ford Motor Company's Board of Directors so that tells you the quality. The top has never been down since its restoration and is mint.
Most of us have purchased cars that we thought were high quality originals only to find that much more money and time would need to be spent to bring it up to the level that we thought it was.
The best way to avoid this is to purchase a car that has already been judged and is a proven award winner. This car has won the three highest awards given by the AACA. It has the Grand National AACA awards as seen in photos but actually the Dearborn Award this car achieved is much harder to get. This car sold at RM Auction for $110,000Chassis No. 99A57282as seen in photos. It can be purchased now with more awards for much less with a very fair reserve. This car has had over $125,000 in restoration alone.
Here is a little history on the 1939 Mercurys. The new 1939 Mercury model 99A convertible Coupe was a 95hp, 239 cu. in. L-head V Eight-cylinder engine, withthree-speed manual transmission, live axle suspension with transverse leaf springs, four-wheel hydraulically-actuated drum brakes. Wheelbase: 116".
Ford made two important model introductions in the 1930's. Both were initially positioned as brand extensions. Both eventually became important brands on their own. The first was the Lincoln-Zephyr in 1936. The second new model introduction was announced to Ford dealers in 1938 wearing the "Ford-Mercury" nameplate. It was positioned as a larger and somewhat more stylish and well-equipped Ford. Built on a four inch longer wheelbase and powered by a 95 horsepower 239 cubic inch development of the Ford flathead V8, the "Ford-Mercury" was intended to give Ford dealers a product they could sell into the Dodge, Pontiac and Oldsmobile market and a product to which Ford customers could aspire as they became more affluent.
The "Ford-Mercury" name, however, fell on its face when presented to the dealers. They objected to the name's intimation that it was only a buffed up and better trimmed Ford and pointed out that clients weren't likely to be confused, or find much in it to which they could aspire. Edsel Ford reacted and the "Ford-" emblems were quickly put aside. The new cars were launched on October 6, 1938 as a 1939 model called simply "Mercury”. A little more space, a little more power, a little more streamlined styling - based on the successful Zephyr - and a little more luxury proved to be just the ticket and the Mercury was immediately successful.
The design that Edsel Ford and Bob Gregorie worked out retained much of the look of the 1939 Fords in order to placate Henry Ford, who still couldn't reconcile himself with the idea that Ford customers needed anything more than the Fords he was already building. The hood was longer, aided by the increase in wheelbase, and the body and fenders were wider. A subtle change was made in the rear fenders where the edges of the wheel well opening crept down over the top of the tire to give something of a skirted rear wheel look. The effect was harmonious and effective. A Mercury looked like a Mercury, was recognizable as a Ford product and carried a hint of Zephyr style in a more affordable package. Bigger and sleeker than a Ford, it was a direct hit on the intended market niche.
This Dingmans 1939 Mercury Chassis no. 99A57282 99A Convertible Coupe is an excellent example from the first year of Mercury production. It is finished in Garnet maroon with matching leather interior upholstery and trim; it also has tan cloth top with a small glass rear window. This was the last year for a floor standard shifter. Accessories include a factory clock, a factory radio and rear wheel fender skirts. The wheels have hub caps, trim rings and carry a set of wide whitewall tires. Please also note I have the very rare 1939 mercury tool kit and minty original jack as seen in the pictures and all included in this sale. The rare 1939 California license plates are not included in this sale, however I may offer them to the new owner. I am selling this car with a very fare reserve or best offer threw eBay. This car is truly spectacular in real life and most likely the finest on the planet.
