The Mercury Cougar of 1970 had a revised look that was designed to retain the untamed spirit that Mercury had built into this model, with Grabber colors and Striping the Eliminator was hard not to miss. Most views were from the rear. :)
“Cougar Eliminator…spoilers hold it down…nothing holds it back.”
This Competition Blue (code J) example being offered, comes with a Marti Report, and Lois Eminger Report.
The Cougar Eliminator was presented to the public as a hardcore performer, but this one actually had the hardware to match.(428 CJ- R)
The front and rear spoilers provided an immediate clue, as did the racing-style mirrors (with driver’s side remote), blacked-out grille with hidden headlights, hood scoop and full-length Eliminator side stripes. " Functional Ram Air only available with the 428 Cobra-Jet Engine"
The Cougar Eliminator could be ordered with a wide variety of performance options that ranged from the 351-cid Four-barrel carb V-8 to the Boss 302 to the 428 Cobra Jet with Ram Air.
Eliminators came from the factory as standards, with XR-7 type instrumentation, that included full competition suspension with heavy-duty shocks and springs, plus a rear sway bar.
The Standard Interior included High Back Bucket seats, Full instrumentation that contains a 6,000-rpm tachometer, oil pressure gauge, rally cloc, two-spoke steering wheel ( Replaced with a 3 Spoke Rim Blow Wheel),and Blacked out Camera Case Finish unique to the Eliminator.
Cougars by the numbers: 72,365 1970 Cougars built; 49,479 were hardtops; only 2,267 received the Eliminator Package; 243 came with the revered 428 Cobra-Jet V-8 engineC-6 Trans; Even fewer came with the Ram Air Induction.
Built in Dearborn MI, this Eliminator is shown as a Stock order that was received in late 1969 and lists Hernandez LM Sales Inc. – Hayward CA. as the receiving dealer. The Restored car is presented in its correct colors. This car was produced on Dec. 11 1969, (3 days behind schedule)
The Marti Report as well as the Lois Eminger Report confirms the Eliminator Package, with 428-4V C, Traction-Lok differential,C-6 Select Shift Transmission,Ram Air Induction,Console,Power Front Disc Brakes,Power Steering, AM Radio, Tinted Glass- Complete.
Professionally Rotisserie Restored by BKR Inc. " Bob Hutton" with the guidance of myself and the previous restoration completed on a similar "Survivor" Eliminator.
I decided to fit the factory optional Styled Steel wheels Trim Rings as seen in the factory literature. The spare matches and the trunk floor is covered with the proper plaid vinyl mat. Discreet Amp and rear speakers installed in rear deck for phone or mp3 player.
The only real deviation from stock was installing FPA Nickel Plated Headers, along with a Dr. Gas Crossover Exhaust 3"Aluminized Pipe to the axles, and 2 12 over axl, similar to factory specs, using factory hangers. (Probably adds 50 HP over stock system alone)
Known History: I purchased it from the 2nd owner who had purchased it in the late 70's. I discovered the car in approx 1988 and after tracking down the current owner, he had no desire to sell the car. Two years later I found its twin nearby in Provo, UT. Fast forward to 1999, I located the car again and the owner was still reluctant to sell. In 2002 the owner's father listed the car in a local newspaper classified ad as a "69 Mercury Interceptor", curious I called to find out it was the 70 Competition Blue Eliminator that I had previously tried to buy twice before. Reluctantly, he finally sold me the car.
With an incorrect drivetrain ( engine/transmission) but with having the correct 31 spline 9" 3.50 .1 Traction Lok rear end, I set out to restore the car.
Previously I had sold a Cougar minus a 428 Cobra Jet with C6 transmission, so this was a perfect match since the donor car was built 3 weeks prior to this car.
