1964 Mercury Comet Cyclone
This is a 1964 Mercury Comet Cyclone. It was the first Cyclone made by Mercury and came out as a mid-year offering. There was rather limited production with only 7,454 units sold. This particular car was ordered at Downtown Lincoln Mercury in Dallas, on 5/24/1964, evidenced by a cancelled check in the amount of $294.20. The car was delivered on 6/18/1964 as evidenced by the buyer’s cancelled check in the amount of $2,742.36. For those too young to remember, checks were sent back to the account holder after they were processed so they are included with the car as part of the documentation. The buyer ordered a 4 speed Cyclone with A/C in a special order color “Frosted Pecan”, paint code P, which is not normally a Comet color. Apparent correspondence between the factory and the dealer indicated that A/C could not be combined with a 4 speed as there would be shifter interference. The crafty salesman solved that problem by ordering the 4 speed car and having the service department install a factory type A/C with instructions to mount the evaporator coil further forward than the factory would have installed it, thereby eliminating the interference with the floor shifter. It all worked just fine so the buyer ended up with one of the only AC 4 speed cars around. Most of this information is included in the documentation package. All in all this is a very unique car and in all likelihood is the only like survivor.
The car was literally owned by one family until the present owner took possession of it in July of 1998. In the owner’s words "it was a very unique and solid car deserving of a full restoration." Requiring several years he painstakingly, and without regard for expense, brought the car back to its original glory, as it is today. This is a very nice full restoration of a very unique car that was very straight, complete, and nearly rust-free to begin with. Only one small section of sheet metal was replaced just behind the rear wheel on the driver’s side, no other metal needed replacement including the floorboards. All of the drivetrain is original to the car as best the owner knows. The 289 engine was professionally built and balanced by a professional machine shop that is well known in the local area. The block needed minimal cleanup at .020 over. The crank did not need to be turned and was polished, standard. The dished stock pistons were replaced with flat-top high quality units and the stock cam was replaced with a comp 260 grind, barely beyond stock. The stock Holley carb was replaced by an Edelbrock, however, the original carb is in the trunk. A Pertonix ignition was added but everything else is pure stock on the engine. The A/C was recently upgraded to 134a and blows cold. There is a slight vibration when the fan is on high speed but it blows so cold high is not really needed. The car has had less than 100 miles put on it since it was completed in 2013. It runs strong, shifts smooth and in all respects drives as it should.
The interior was completely redone with factory correct seat covers, dash pad, door panels, and carpet. A new Falcon style headliner was utilized as the original, sectionalcardboard style was not logical. The dash components were professionally refinished and replated. The radio was sent to Mr. Radio in Dallas where he rebuilt the unit to incorporate FM stereo. This type of feature really shows how detailed this restoration was. Some modern comforts were added like the FM radio but he made every effort possible to keep it as original as possible.
Literally everything on the car was either cleaned and painted, refurbished, replated, replaced, or rebuilt as needed. The underside of the car was cleaned and detailed as well. The odometer reflects 39,713 miles and it’s the owner’s belief that the odometer has rolled over once but there is no way to confirm the actual mileage.
The car comes with a clear Texas title and the only reason it is being sold is because of space constraints of an upcoming move. You won't find another Cyclone out there as quality as this one and if you find one close it will likely not possess some of the rare factory order components this one has.
The car is worth more than the reserve!
