1971 Mercedes-Benz 200-Series Additional Info:
Thank you for considering my wonderful and yes, quite rare, chrome bumper 250C. The coupes of this era were all hand built automobiles. The car has sat in a heated garage since 1998 where it was driven in and parked. Upon removal of the car from its hibernation of close to 20 years, I have done an initial assessment of its general condition and have found the car to be a rather nice example, well worth returning to its original glory and beauty. The mechanicals are all original including its original engine, drive train and dual solex carburetors. The automatic transmission shifts on the column. The car is a US production vehicle including its 50 state ID plate forward of the radiator shell. The engine oil is clean, clear and full. The radiator is full of fresh coolant and there are no leaks of any kind. Its owner indicated that he simply parked it the Fall of 1998, and that he never returned to use it again. I believe this incredibly LOW mileage to be accurate given the rather short life of its use.
We were quite easily able to get it running. The tank was drained and cleaned. Fresh gas, engine oil and a new battery later, it fired right up! Some wiring issues were sorted out. The engine was fit with a new water pump, 4 season thermostat, pulley, housing and fan belts. The engine sound is outstanding. The 2.5 liter 6 cylinder OHC engine fit with its original dual carbs has a wonderful European note to it. The trans shifts tight, brakes and exhaust seem fine. As you might expect, there are some rust issues on the front floors as well as the left side of the trunk. These are not major and can be sorted out easily with patch panel replacements. The important stuff is all solid. Floor carpets are missing and naturally would require new ones. Otherwise, the interior is in remarkable condition on this hand built coach. The tires are all matching, all hold air well and seem fine for this years season to drive on. The glass is is all original and in excellent condition. As we have come to expect with any quality Mercedes, the doors open and close like a vault. The wheel covers have all been stripped and polished since these photos were taken. I would simply repaint them all, including the two spares provided or leave them polished as was the fashion on the Continent production vehicles of the era.
These engines are known to be among the very best ever built by Mercedes. Feel free to call or text me at (914) 403 1768 for further details regarding mechanicals and cosmetics.
With respect to the exterior, the paint enjoys its original color and is quite shiny. The color is among the most desirable, non metallic Midnight blue. The seats are totally original. Navy Blue MB Tex. The headliner is acceptable. The dash, guages and facia are simply perfect vintage Mercedes. The wood veneer is still moist.
With some well directed energy and resources, this car will return to the road, see light of day and serve its new owner for years and years to come. The value of the Coupes are climbing right behind the Pagoda models. The 2.5 is actually a rarer motor than the 2.8 and yet delivers similar performance. With its short chrome bumpers, the car looks very Euro! Please contact me via cell or text at (914) 403 1768.
On the subject of trades, I am most interested in American and European Motorcycles. I also have an interest in European and American Sport Cars. Feel free to run any ideas of offers by me.
The car is located at my home in the scenic hamlet of Bedford Village NY, just 42 miles North of Times Square. New York State did not begin to issues titles until 1974, therefore, the car is legally sold on a transferable registration and an affidavit of bill of sale. If transportation is a concern, I am able to recommend one of the most reputable movers in the nation for a free estimate. Transport Masters/ David Lempert.(561) 482 7789.
