1958 Mercedes-Benz 220s “Ponton” Cabriolet
This gorgeous 1958 Mercedes-Benz 220s “Ponton” Cabriolet underwent a ground up restoration which was completed in 2011. The engine was rebuilt and the transmission, suspension, brakes and brake lines, rear end, fuel pumps, fuel lines, exhaust system and all other components were completely redone. The chrome was refurnished to concourse level - a major expense considering the amount of chrome on the car. The paint work was completed concourse quality using single stage Standox DB157 Grey Beige. All panel fittings and alignment were beautifully done with even gaps throughout. The doors, hood and trunk lid close smoothly.
The dash area is incredible as the Rosewood, chrome and instruments were refurbished. The front and rear seats, door panel, kick panels, etc. were redone in a beautiful chocolate leather and the carpets were replaced using the correct wool. The soft top was replaced, including the inside headliner. This car was stripped of its electrical wiring and a new wiring harness was installed including switches and necessary connections such as relays.
Only Mercedes OEM and NOS parts were used during the restoration which added considerable costs.
The overall highlight of this vehicle is the undercarriage which is usually the biggest indicator of how extensive the restoration was. After receiving such a meticulous restoration, the car was shown and awarded the AACA National First Prize in 2012 and since then it’s been in a climate controlled storage facility. From the factory, a Hydark automatic clutch which mates to a four-speed Column-mounted transmission was installed. The car comes with restoration photos and documentation.
