DESCRIPTION:

Here is a rare opportunity to own a classic low mileage (53,000) 1969 Mercedes-Benz 280 SE convertible, which is one of approximately 2600 built from 1968–1971. It wears a repaint of the factory Horizon Blue with the matching dark blue leather interior. Power for the ‘Benz comes from the original and matching numbers 2.8 L fuel-injected inline 6-cylinder (rated at 160 hp.) backed by a 4-speed automatic transmission. It also has air conditioning, which was installed as a factory option (it was Frigiking, now it is a York system).

The history on this car is quite unique. The first owner purchased the car new, from Benson Mercedes-Benz of Annapolis, MD in 1969. It was then traded in to the same dealership during the early 1980’s and the owner decided to keep it as a collector car. The Benz proudly wears the “Silver Star Preservation” grille badge which was given by the Mercedes-Benz Club in Florida. All service was done by the dealership up until the mid-2000’s. The family has decided, now is the time to let someone else enjoy this classic.

The exterior appears to be a single stage urethane which looks great. There is no evidence of bubbling or cracking in the paint. The exact age of the paint job is not known. It is believed that the body panels are original to the car as well as all the exterior chrome, which is also in excellent condition. It has always been kept in the garage. The top has also been replaced using Haartz cloth material. The glass appears original too and the windshield is showing some aging of the tint (see photos).

The interior is original and in good condition. Only the driver’s seat shows some age (see photos). All the factory gauges work. The only exceptions are the radio and clock. The A/C has been converted to R134 refrigerant but needs to be charged.

The 2.8 L 6-cylinder starts easily and runs smoothly. The 4-speed automatic transmission shifts easily too. There is some documentation showing maintenance which includes a new gas tank, fuel pump and lines, as well as new fuel injectors.

Original documentation included with the purchase are the owner’s manuals, data card, dated receipt from the first owner, and Frigiking manual. Reproduction shop manuals are also included.
