TLDR; beautiful, extremely rare spec car that needs some TLC
All right. You know what this is. Cool, black, moonroof, leather.
I won’t pretend it’s perfect, it’s got some needs such that the avid Mercedes lover will be able to turn this into a beautiful car. Even low effort will make this a nice daily.
Let’s get into it
The good:
Four used tires that aren’t dry rotted. They do not match, so this will need attention, but trust me this is better than what was on there before.
Both fuel pumps, the fuel filter, fuel strainer, and fuel tank suction line are all brand new. New air filter, oil filter, headlight switch.
This car is painted black, has tinted windows, and has a moonroof.
For you avid fans. This has the dark palomino leather seats from before the facelift, and has all of the great looks.
The seats are also the rare orthopedic multi-contour seats. The bladders work and the adjusters function, though the controls leak a little air through the old rubber seals. Did I mention the seats are heated? No? They are..
This is also a 4-matic drivetrain. When checking under the driver front wheel, spinning the wheel by hand showed the CV axle and front driveshaft spun freely meaning the front differential and the transfer case spin freely also.
This car has the M103 3.0L inline six. Enough said.
The frame is not rusted.
The bad:
The radiator support is bent (it was pulled on, but the radiator is perfect)
The paint has a few tiny chips which have some tiny rust spots.
It leaks a little oil. (I mean duh. It’s 35 years old)
The front left sway bar bushing is disintegrated and the sway bar is disconnected. This is a high urgency fix because it hangs and hits the wheel and makes the handling atrocious. I currently have it strapped to the lower control arm so it’s safe to move at low to medium speeds.
The 4-Matic light is currently lit. I’m certain this is because of low fluid so I’m ordering some. The car drives smooth, the transfer case is not locked, and sharp turns do not cause any strange behavior or skipping.
The electric cooling fans are loud. The driver side fan is missing a blade. They only come on after driving hard and getting hot though.
The air conditioner does not appear to work. I also can’t get the fans to blow consistently. I think the buttons need to be cleaned.
The wood trim is warped and cracked. (Also duh - it’s 35 years old. This is unfortunately common for this car).
The driver door key hole doesn’t work - also common, you’ll just need a key cylinder repair kit). This car has the hydraulic locks. If you know you know. They do all actuate, but the best way currently is to use the passenger or trunk lock to actuate the doors.
Related to this is the front seat adjustment leading to some air leakage.
The driver seat bolster is missing a piece of leather and the up and down adjustment gets stuck on one side.
The paint is faded and there are a couple of exterior trim pieces that have fallen off.
The interior plastic is pretty brittle (again, 35 years old) this car was towed at one point and whoever towed it shattered the plastic on the shifter. ♂️ the rear view mirror hangers are also cracked.
Listen. This is a beautiful, and extremely rare version of a classic. The W124 is a luxury tank built when cars were good. It just happens to be old.
This is an enthusiasts car that needs a little TLC and will make all the neighbors jealous.
