1967 Mercedes-Benz 230SL Additional Info:

Hi! I purchased this car last fall with the intention of restoring it but have decided to focus on a Porsche 356 that I came across instead, so this is for sale.
One of only 185 1967 Mercedes 230SL. The car is complete but not in running condition. It was last registered and driven in 2019 and has been in storage in a private residential garage since then. When I purchased it we did a compression test and found roughly 150 psi on all cylinders. The fuel pump by the gas tank is dead and I believe the main reason why it won't run. It will fire off with a shot of starter fluid or spray gas shot into the intake manifold. A bore scope was used to examine the inner cylinders and nothing unusual was found. Everything is in place and original in the engine compartment. I was told the radiator and some fuel lines were replaced in 2017 and the car driven occassionally up until it was parked in 2020 during covid.
The car has been repainted at some point in the past, a decent enough job that it could be touched up and brought to an aceptable level for a nice daily driver. There are minor scrapes and one small dent in the roof from having stuff stored on it while garaged. There are also some rust bubbles forming in the driver's rear fender flare. I found one soft spot, about 6" long, in the bottom of the passenger side rocker. That is the only structural rust I've found, easily patched. I would not replace the entire rocker panel. Other than those two areas the car appears remakably rust free. There is some surface rust in both front footwells but the floors appear solid. The trunk floor is also quite solid aside from some minor surface rust in the passenger rear corner. gl
All of the glass is good. The windshield is clear with no fogging but some minor chips- no stars. The side glass is near perfect. The rear window is free fron cracks, chips, and stars but has fogging around the edges and what looks like cracks/shrinkage in the inner plastic of the safety glass layer- odd. None of it is so bad as to obscure your vision- it appears fine until you look closely.
The wood trim needs to be refinished but isn't broken or warped, The dash pad is remarkably intact. Other than the driver's seat the upholstery is in easily restored condition with the exception of some of the trim for the hardtop. The convertible top needs to be replaced but all of the frames, trim, etc are there and in usable condition.
The chrome is in good to excellent condition with the exception of a small, soft dent in the passenger rear bumper. It's hard to see, but there. Everything else should clean up with a light polish to near new condition. The plastic insert for the driver's headlight is broken where it wraps around the top of the headlight bulb, again hard to see but it needs to be disclosed.
The car rolls easily, brakes work, clutch works, windows roll up/down, etc.
The title is where this gets a bit complicated. When the car was originally imported and registered in Washington state it was registered using the engine number, not the VIN number. Annual tabs/registration went without a hitch until it was sold to me and the seller had lost the title after decades of ownership. Per Washington rules a State Patrol inspection was required when the a bill of sale was presented and the true VIN couldn't be found in WA records. So I have in my posession the following notorized documents: an affidavit of lost title/release of interest with the original (incorrectly inserted) engine number in place of the VIN. An affidavit of lost title/release of interest with the correct VIN. A Washington State Patrol inspection declaration stating the correct VIN, and a bill of sale. These documents are sufficient to register the car in WA state and obtain a clear, clean title. But it's registration only for three years, then the title is released. I do not know how your state will view this situation and how it may affect your title process. There's nothing illegal or comppromised going on here- just the forced correction of a 58 year old clerical mistake by a title clerk in WA. Accordingly, I sell the car as "parts only" and make no gurantee that you will be able to obtain clear, clean title in any state other than Washington.
Feel free to call my cell, 425-941-7807, with any questions you may have. I will of course assist in any way that I can with shipping, inspections, etc. but you will need to arrange and pay for them. Cheers, Conrad
