1986 Mercedes-Benz 190D W201 Overview
General Overview:
This vehicle has been garage-stored all its life. 39 years.
Non-turbo 2.5 diesel
90-95 HP
119,800 miles
Automatic-Transmission
It has never experienced severe rains, snow, hail or any type of weather that caused any type of light to severe defects on or inside the car.
This car has gotten a full exterior detail 2x a year and is washed every couple of weeks.
Has always been serviced and maintained extremely well, which is rare for the w201 lineup as they are simply discarded and left to rot out in a garage or field.
Only genuine Mercedes parts have gone into the car. Never OEM.
Nothing has ever been modified or tampered with in any way to lessen or increase the power of the engine. It is 100% stock. The same goes for the interior, except the radio.
All parts on this car, except for the radio, are genuine Mercedes. Not OEM.
Does not leak any oil, fuel, or other fluids.
Overall, the car is one of the most, if not the most, reliable cars you’ll ever experience.
What’s been done to the car in terms of appearance/modification?
Rear trunk lid emblems stating “2.5” and “190d” have been removed to provide a more custom/sleeker look.
I still have the originals and will include them.
Windows, except for the windshield, have been tinted to 30%.
History/Service Records:
I have all printed service and history records of the car and will provide them.
I have the records of the previous owners' servicing.
All will be provided.
Title/Spare Keys:
Title is clean with no liens or accidents.
Car comes with spare keys that were never used.
All will be provided.
Undercarriage & Body:
There is zero rust on the body, wheel wells, side skirts, inside of doors, or underneath the trunk.
There is zero rust in the undercarriage as well. There are no signs of severe corrosion from weathering or seasonal road treatment, such as laying down salt in the winter.
One of the most noticeable signs for Mercedes’ w201 lineup for failure is rusting at the wheel wells and this car has none of that.
Nothing in the undercarriage has been cut, damaged or ruined in any way.
Shocks and suspension are in great condition, and the car floats like a boat over speed bumps and uneven roads.
Overall, all the previous owners have taken excellent care of this vehicle.
Paint:
The paint of the car is the same paint called “Blauschwartz” in German, which is Metallic Blue.
Color Code: 199u
The car has been repainted with the same color to restore it to its original state.
There are no hairline marks, deep swirls, or cuts in the paint whatsoever.
There are a few very tiny marks here and there.
Bumpers:
Bumpers are in great shape.
There is a scuff mark in the rear.
They are not loose or coming off anytime soon.
The original toe-eye cover is missing below the front bumper.
I highly recommend having one fabricated as these are extremely difficult to find.
Engine & Automatic Transmission:
This engine is one of the most, if not the most, reliable, heavy-duty and unkillable engines Mercedes has ever produced.
They are famously known for being the million mile engine!
Famous Quote: “You can go around the world in a Mercedes three times and it’ll still be a Mercedes.” Hence, rarely needing to go to a mechanic.
It is an OM602 2.5 inline five-cylinder engine.
The engine produces about 85-89 HP and functions excellently on non-hilly roads.
Requires diesel fuel and always gets the occasional fuel injector cleaner.
The transmission is a 4-speed automatic.
The shifting on this car is unbelievably smooth.
So far, it is the smoothest and most effortless shifting I’ve ever experienced.
It comes with a 2nd and 3rd gear option, which are needed when going up hills or in windy hilly areas.
Headlights/Lights:
The headlights have been upgraded to the Euro-style EVO headlights from Unique Style Racing.
The originals were 39 years old and rotted out due to the material they were made of.
Everything is fully functional. The headlamps, brights and fog lights.
The lights have halogen bulbs and emit white light instead of the original dull white with yellow fogs.
All lights are fully operational, including the rear seat ambient lighting at night.
Windshield, Rear Windshield, Windows & Sunroof:
The front and rear windshields are not cracked, scratched and have never been replaced.
They are 100% original with the original trim pieces and rubber sealant.
The front windshield does have a small ding from a small piece of gravel on the driver’s side.
The power-operated windows are fully functional and are not cracked or ruined in any way.
They are also original with the original trim and rubber seals.
The sunroof is fully operational and is not rusted out, jammed, seized or ruined in any way.
Works smoothly compared to other w201s.
Radio Antenna:
Fully operational and goes up/down smoothly.
The rubber seal holding it in place might have to be replaced at some point, but is nothing severe at the moment.
Hood, Grill & Emblems:
The hood has zero dents, bumps or any type of damage whatsoever.
The grill and two Mercedes emblems are 100% original and have never been replaced.
The grill is in excellent shape for its age and is in no way in need of replacement soon.
The black plastic inserts of the grill have been repainted to their original matte black color due to natural wear and tear throughout the years.
The hood’s pull-out latch is still operable and strong.
Does not feel weak or brittle in any way, shape or form.
It has also been painted to match the grill inserts.
It is also original.
Trunk:
The trunk lid is original with no dents, dings or damage of any kind.
The trunk is surprisingly spacious and could fit the luggage of a family of five.
The trunk has never suffered any type of severe water damage, fuel or oil damage.
Nothing flammable or filthy has ever been stored inside.
The most the trunk has ever held was lightweight, carry-on luggage.
The original spare and jack are inside as well and have only been used a few times.
The trunk lid emblem is original and has never been replaced.
The star does have a few crack marks and might need replacement.
The original emblems on the sides of the trunk lid stating “2.5” and “190d” have been removed to provide the car a more custom and sleeker look.
I still have the originals and will include them with the car.
Tires/Rims:
The tires and tread are basically brand new and only have a few hundred miles on them.
They don’t suffer from any type of aggressive driving or damage from going over damaged roads.
The rims are originals and have never been switched out by me or the previous owners.
The maintenance, in terms of cleaning, of the rims is extremely easy and requires little effort to clean as these car emit a little brake dust.
Brakes:
The brakes are brand new and the lines have been bled.
Never had a problem and the same goes for the previous owners.
Interior:
The interior of the car for being 39 years old is in immaculate condition.
The leather in both the rear and driver’s seat are not bagged or worn down in any way.
The leather covered posts need to be fixed/redone.
The passenger seat has very little bagging on the actual seat instead of the backrest, but is nothing to worry about in the meantime.
The storage holders behind of the driver and passenger seats are stretched out and in need of replacement.
This is very common amongst w201s.
The gray carpeting both inside the car and in the trunk has been deeply penetrated through steam cleaning and are like new.
The carpeting has never experienced muddy or dirty boots/shoes.
The carpeting has weather-tech rubber mats for further preservation and protection.
The ceiling is very clean as well.
There are some slight marks where the sunroof is located, but can be cleaned.
I refrain from cleaning it at the moment as I don’t wish to risk damaging to permanently marking the ceiling even more.
The dash does suffer from some light cracking naturally due to age, but this occurs to most w201s after some time, especially the ones that are well taken care of.
The speedometer and other gauges are fully functional.
The leather steering wheel is in great condition, but does have a crack mark on the right side of the center of it.
Again, due to age.
All lights, windshield wiper speeds and indicators are fully functional.
All the vinyl, plastic black trim, wood trim and leather pieces are all original.
Health-Kit:
The original health kit is intact and has never been used.
Located behind the rear seats.
Everything is still inside in its original white plastic zipper case.
Heat/A-C:
The a/c and heat both work, and the temperature slider is fully operational.
This car blasts freezing cold air and is perfect for Florida or Arizona weather.
The heat is great in the winters in NY.
Other buttons that navigate the air flow are fully operational as well.
Radio/Electronics;
Radio has been switched out to a Pioneer Mixtrax to somewhat adapt to modern conveniences such as bluetooth, having a usb port, etc.
It works fantastically and is probably much better than the original.
One of the previous owners removed it and installed it.
All buttons work on this car, including the antenna switch.
Ashtray/Cigarette Lighter:
Neither has been used.
The car is smoke-free.
The coils in the lighter are worn down due to age and being unused.
Center Console/E-Brake:
The center console is extremely basic and only holds pens or coins.
The emergency brake is fully functional unlike a lot of w201s out there.
The e-brake does hold the car in place and is always used, even when parked level due to always aiming to keep pressure off the transmission.
The gray center console carpet is stained and I’d recommend a replacement.
Glove Box:
The glove box is in tip-top shape.
The inner light works.
Still has its original stickers from 39 years ago.
The cup holders have never been used.
Opens and closes with ease and does not come flying down open while driving.
Vanity Mirrors:
The vanity mirror lights work, the glass is clear and are in great condition.
Manuals and Pamphlets:
I have the original manuals and pamphlets for the car.
They are in good condition considering there age.
Car Latches:
All the latches on this car work.
Nothing is jammed, seized or deeply worn down.
This car closes and locks like a tank.
End Note:
Overall, this car is in excellent condition for being 39 years old! And I deeply hope that it ends up in the hands of an owner who takes great pride in Mercedes and other classics as well.
You absolutely cannot go wrong with this car, especially with it being a diesel.
Again, as the famous quote in Europe used to go, “You can go around the world three times in a Mercedes and it’ll still be a Mercedes!”
