1993 Mercedes-Benz G-Class Cabriolet (GCab)
This swap is so meticulously done that it’s essentially the same as mounting a complete ‘97+ body onto a ‘93 G350 frame and changing the VINs. In 1997, Mercedes-Benz introduced a mid-cycle refresh, bringing significant updates across the car—new sheet metal, a full power top, a revised interior, and drivetrain enhancements. This conversion has captured every one of those details flawlessly.
Some key modifications include:
Cutting out the driver’s side rear wheel well and welding in the ‘97+ rear panel cover to relocate the battery to the trunk.
Completely reconfiguring the engine bay to match the ‘97+ layout. This includes swapping the entire front driver’s side wheelhouse to reposition the wiper fluid reservoir, which was originally near the firewall on the passenger side in the ‘93 model. They also replaced the front right fender to ensure the correct intake placement—G350s have an intake hole in the driver’s side fender, while G300TDs have it on the passenger side. Everything is spot on for a ‘97+, including relocated ABS, coolant tank, electronics, oil cooler, and even the shift from single to dual washer nozzle sprayers on the fresh air vent intake.
Swapping the entire upper dashboard for the ‘97+ cluster, which required the revised top dash pad. The center console was also replaced with the later style, power seats and cruise control were added (neither originally on the data card), and the sun visors were updated to the lighted versions from the later models.
The level of detail in this conversion is impressive—it’s clear that serious effort went into making this a true ‘97+ power-top build. Hats off to those who performed this work in Europe!
Even if it’s not an original, it checks every box for G-Wagen desirability: a pre-2001 model, Cabrio with a power top, OM606 engine, and a 5-speed automatic gearbox—both sourced from an original G300TD! What more could you ask for?
