Hi. I just graduated UCLA with my PhD and now will be commuting to Cal Poly Pomona, so I’m looking to sell my 1985 Mercedes Benz W123 300D (Turbo sedan). I’ve had it for five-years, driven it for approximately 50,000 miles, and have put approximately $15,000 into it maintenance-wise. I am listing it for $10,000 to recuperate 2/3rds of what I put into it. I am willing to negotiate down a bit (see to-dos), but would like to use this sale for a down payment on a new car. Mechanically, the car is reliable as a daily driver. A few cosmetic things that would make this car look brand new. Therefore, this car could be great for someone’s first car or a classic car fanatic looking to fully restore a Mercedes classic.
It currently has around 276,000 miles on it with the original engine. I can give you the exact odometer reading if you are interested. I have used certified Mercedes mechanics in Glendale and Orange who specialize in this model. In Summer 2021, I replaced the full cooling system, breaks, a manual switch for the A/C, and fixed pipe cracks in the undercarriage. In Fall 2023, I replaced oil hoses and the oil pump to fix leaks. Personally, I installed a Bluetooth radio, a USB charging port, replaced the right blinker turn signal, and replaced some of the electrical switches to make sure all the windows and lights work. I also installed a manual vacuum plug where the monovalve is to get the A/C to blow cold (< 40 F) and the heat to blow hot; you just need to unplug the vacuum hose to switch over.
To-do list on this car:
The vacuum hoses and some hoses underneath the hood could benefit from replacement according to my mechanic.
Cosmetically, on the interior, there are some tears in the leather that could be reupholstered.
There are minor dents in a few of the doors (nothing major).
The exterior could benefit from a strip down and repainting (my mechanic in Glendale knows a person who strips, buffs, and paints classics).
There is a rust spot on the trunk behind the rear driver side tire; this is from a leak where the radio antenna is.
With all W123, the automatic shift is a bit jerky when the car first starts up and during colder nights or if this is not your daily driver can be prone to cold starts.
Let me know if you are interested. The car has had three owners including myself and comes with a clean California title. I also have a bunch of parts, cleaning materials, tools, oil filters, etc. in storage containers in the trunk. Of course, you can test drive it.
Local pickup in Los Feliz area of Los Angeles. You can pay for shipping if you'd like.
