1968 MERCEDES-BENZ 200D FintailHorizon Blue color with rare, original burgundy/red interior
This car was a passion project for 1.5 years where most everything that needed attention was rebuilt, refreshed or replaced. Ithas 133,890 original miles on the chassis/drivetrain and is fitted with a new, uprated 240D diesel engine which has just 11,000 miles since it was rebuilt. The car rides and drives nice so it's an excellent cruiser with a chassis and body in very good condition. It is also a complete car and reliable daily driver that garners a steady flow of compliments. The new engine accelerates quickly (for a diesel) and cruises with a consistent 28-30 miles per gallon. The floor-shift, four-speed manual transmission isfun to drive and easy to operate. Itwas rebuilt this past spring and has only 400 miles on it. First gear is nice and low and great for climbing steep roads or in slow-crawling traffic.
RECENT SERVICE• The 240D engine makes this car special. The engine is three generations newer than the stock engine with excellent power and an oil cooler so it's not prone to overheating. Parts are easy to find and inexpensive and mechanics find it easy to work on.• The car was painted HORIZON BLUE (Mercedes color #304) in October of 2015.People often compliment the color or ask for its name. Any imperfections in the body were addressed prior to painting but some paint bubbling can be seen in the pictures. The frame required no straightening and there were no signs of major accidents.• The dashboard is in incredible condition and every gauge within the instrument cluster works (including the clock!) The windshield trim, glove box, dash speaker grill, seats and c-pillar air vents are all in excellent condition.• All glass is in excellent condition with no cracks or chips.• It has the original Blaupunkt radio which is disconnected and there is an additional AM/FM cassette radio mounted beneath the driver's seat that works.• Rust: This car has very little no rust. There is some on the underside of the chassis near the lift tubes (see pictures). The trunk has no rust and is in excellent condition. The door undersides and jams are in excellent condition.• The ride is nice because every rubber bushing in both the front and rear ends has been replaced, including the two large differential support bushings. A set of air shocks in the rear make the car comfortable to drive.• Steering is excellent. We spent a lot of time getting the ride and steering right so it tracks straight and doesn't dart off when you hit a bump.• Hancook Optimo white-wall tires size 205-75-14 were added at 129,618 miles which is a slightly taller tire than stock because the wheel wells accommodate them and the stronger engine easily drives them yielding higher top-end speeds.• Complete new brake system was added 5000 miles ago including, a new brake master cylinder, flex hoses, front calipers, brake pads, rear wheel cylinders and shoes. Everything was replaced except the hard lines and the rotors which were fine.• New clutch disc, pilot bearing, shifter bushings, transmission bushing, center mount, clutch master and slave cylinders installed 8000 miles ago.• Car is plumbed and ready for an auxiliary fuel tank in the trunk if desired (see pictures).• Rear air shocks are filled through standard air valve in the trunk to adjust the ride height and quality. Great if you want to carry heavy items oradd an extra fuel tank in the trunk.• Front suspension has new Billstein shock absorbers, new tie rod ends, center link and steering stabilizer.• New Optima battery.• New horn purchased in India (it's very loud!)• Re-chromed rear bumper.• Painted and detailed engine bay.• Driver's side mirror is new old stock.
OPERATIONThe car is fitted with the "new-style" glow plugs which makes it an ultra-reliable starter. To start, simply turn the ignition key and use the stock starter pull-start switch on the dash.Cold starts or cold days require use of a momentary button to energize the glow plugs. Simply press it for a few seconds before using the pull-start switch.Engine off requires ignition key off and flipping a concealed switch.
SALE INCLUDES• Original factory build sheet from Stuttgart, Germany (obtained from the Mercedes-Benz Classic Center)• Original chrome trim which goes on the Fintails (included with sale but not pictured or installed) Very rare.• Original jack• All factory service manuals on CD and PDF• Complete records from all three previous owners• File of receipts documenting a tremendous amount of work performed within the last 12,000 miles
