Want to turn some heads? This is your car!
Come look... This absolutely gorgeous 350SL, a U.S. version, was originally delivered to its buyer in Germany on February 3rd, 1972 (all original paperwork included).
The original buyer was a member of a very prominent family who owned the St. Louis Browns Baseball team, which relocated to Baltimore and became the Orioles.
1972 was a big year for Mercedes and marked the first year for this body style which came to be known as the R107.
The 1972 U.S. model was labeled as a 350SL, but has a 4.5L engine; in 1973 the model was correctly renamed as 450SL.
These two model years (1972 and 1973) were the only years to have the smaller euro-bumpers which fit the car's classic styling much better than the larger ones that were installed on later models.
In addition, the 1972 model did not have a catalytic converter nor the complex and trouble-prone climate control system of later years.
This car is an early example, serial number 2847 and shows 64,992 miles on the odometer.
Documents exist which show that the car has only been driven 1,500 miles in the last eight years.
The car was owned by the original family from its original purchase in 1972 until the sale in November almost 38 years of continuous ownership.
Since then, there have been two other owners, I am the third, andI purchased it in June 2016 as a birthday gift for my wife.
The car has been driven no more than 200 miles since then and only used on fine summer days!
Original manuals and receipts from time of sale and European delivery are included as well!
The car was repainted in 2009 in the original dark olive color (Dunkeloliv), Code 291 on the data plate.
The color combination of the dark green exterior and Bamboo interior makes this car a stunning addition to any garage or driveway...Attractive is an understatement.
The car comes equipped with a beautiful brown canvas convertible top which looks amazing against the deep green body color.
In addition, I am also including the removable hardtop which is the same stunning green as the body.
According to the previous seller, within the last few years (and within 600 miles) the following services have been performed on the car for which full receipts are available:
· All fluids (oil, transmission, fuel, brake, cooling, steering, axle) and filters (where applicable) changed
· Steering Coupler replaced (common Benz problem - causes vague steering if worn)
· Valves adjusted to specification
· Front sub-frame mounts, motor mounts, motor shock absorbers, transmission mounts, rear sway bar links, front sway bar bushings replaced
· Steering box seals replaced
· Distributor vacuum advance replaced
· A/C system O-rings replaced, and the system changed over from R-12 to R-134 equivalent
· New battery
· Interior rejuvenated with beautiful replacement center console and new carpets.
Within the past 1,500 miles, the brake booster, brake lines and hoses, water pump, and exhaust system were all replaced.
It has the original working Becker radio.
The car has no rust.
You are unlikely to find an SL which has had so many recent replacements of significant components which will help ensure trouble-free enthusiast driving for years.
Included are the following items:
Car cover (used to keep dust off of car).
Harness and winch for lifting and storing the hardtop.
Spare fuel pump
Specialty tool for valve adjusting
Original first aid kit and holder (mounts behind seats)
A few other spare parts.
Minor defects:
The canvas top looks beautiful, almost as if it were never used. However there is a small area of discoloration on the upper corner of the rear vinyl window.
The hardtop has a tiny ding on the top back edge.
There is also a small ding on the area just in front of the trunk lid.
The last three pictures show these relatively minor defects pretty clearly.
The vacuum door lock system is currently acting up (doesn't affect ability to lock car by key), but everything else on the car works including the clock!
A truly lovely car...come check it out!
