Here’s another low-mileage, great-running & driving Mercedes we’ve acquired recently for our Ebay customers. We were told this nice 450SL sold new at Doxon Mercedes in Tacoma, Washington in the spring of 1980 and has been driven on our snow and salt-free Pacific Northwest roads it’s entire life. From the moment I first laid eyes on this roadster, it was very obvious it has been treated well and with care over the years. There aren’t many left out there in this condition and brings to mind the old saying in the collector world: “Any car can be restored given enough time & money, but it can only be original once!”. It really almost looks, drives and feels the way it did when it drove off the showroom floor 36 years ago. You’ll be hard-pressed to find another like it at this ridiculously low reserve price!
Reluctantly, the SL was turned over to me a short time ago for resale by the family of the long-term second owner. I’ve been assured these are actual, correct miles on the car. They bought it from the original owner in March, 1988 and only used it as a fair weather driver. It was regularly serviced, but ALWAYS kept garaged & covered at her north Puget Sound home. I will be sure to pass along several of the original factory manuals tucked away in the glove compartment when the Mercedes ships out to you.
I’ve got to tell you, having driven it virtually every day since, what a treat! Where else will you find this kind of luxury, vintage style, safety and mechanical reliability wrapped up in one gorgeous ride? Please feel free to contact me with any questions. My name is Mark Thompson and my direct phone number is 206/914-1173. You’re welcome and encouraged to make an appointment to inspect and drive this nice car.
VEHICLE DESCRIPTION
Ever driven one of these Mercedes with the powerful 4.5 liter engine? Smooth is the word for sure. Smooth powerful acceleration. Smooth handling in the curves or on the highway, too. I’ve always considered the W107 chassis convertibles constructed through the mid-80’s as some of the last hand-built, truly high-quality Benz and have heard many others say the same thing! Take a look at the photos and I’m sure you’ll agree with me what a find this is. What you see is the result of a wash and vacuum only. It’s obviously been allowed to spend a majority of its life garaged because the overall exterior condition is superior. Climb over, under and throughout and I know you’ll come up smiling! Rust? Please, our 450SL hates rust and you won’t find a thing to worry about here. Yes, the Puget Sound region is famous for rain, but our winter roads are never salted. If at all, we only get one or two days of light snow a year. Everyone panics and stays home. Besides, this Benz hasn’t seen many winter roads over it’s three decades. Climb over, under and all around this car - I know you’ll come up smiling!!
Having personally owned more than twenty Mercedes over the years, I’ve developed a great appreciation for their style, mechanical reliability and overall driving experience. THIS CAR RUNS OUT JUST AS IT WAS MEANT TO, VIRTUALLY AS WELL AS THE DAY IT WAS GIVEN THE FINAL WHITE GLOVE INSPECTION AT THE FACTORY. I’VE NEVER DRIVEN AN SL OF ANY VARIANT THAT I’VE LIKED BETTER!! I’m convinced you’ll be proud to own and drive it as well.
CONDITION:
In total, this is an exceptionally low mileage, clean, well-cared for, smoke-free car. I take great pride in the vehicles we sell and feel that you should know as much about them as possible. Accordingly, here’s a list of the good and also the one or two small things needing attention:
Take literally two or three seconds of cranking, even when starting cold, and the powerful 4.5L V-8 engine starts immediately every time. The automatic transmission shifts smoothly and just as it should with absolutely no slippage. The car idles, runs and drives like a Mercedes is supposed to – strong, immediate oil pressure, strong battery and charging system, no overheating, no perceived brake-pull or alignment issues! There is also NO excessive engine smoke, even after sitting at idle for many minutes (the photos you see were all taken with the engine running). I’ve now put close to 500 miles on over the past two months and freeway cruised at 60 MPH for several hours. The factory dark gray metallic paint has had one respray to the original color and is in good overall condition. The front fenders, doors, rear quarters are all very solid. I was pleasantly surprised by the excellent condition of the soft top; NO rips, cracks, tears, faded material and NO mold or canvas rot from being put away wet. All three plastic windows are clear. Of course the removable color-matched hardtop is included as well. All four wheels are straight and true and the matched spare will arrive stowed in the trunk as shown along with the jack. Take another good look at my interior pics (all photos were taken on 5/24/16). Often, you’ll find worn springs and disintegrating leather on these cars. This is NOT the case here. Hop in and feel comfortable sitting on these MB Vinyltex seats for hours. Both window switches and lift motors work fine. I always try to point out small things possibly needing attention as well as positive items: both the heater and air conditioning systems appear complete, but the A/C could stand a recharge. The heater fan does not come on, though heat does blow from both the defroster and lower vents when in motion. A rear section of carpet beneath the passenger seat is missing, but not very noticeable. Becker “Mexico” stereo cassette radios were standard issue in almost all 1980’s Mercedes when new, but most owners upgraded to aftermarket tape or CD players many years ago. This rig has a nice Clarion Stereo that works well, including the tape player.
We’re always very happy to work with any shipper you choose, but you’re also welcome to do what many of our past buyers from as far away as Alaska, Arizona, the Midwest, Canada, Florida, New York and even the Mexican Baja have done – fly in here to Seattle (we’ll pick you up at Sea-Tac International just a few miles away) and then start a road trip home the same day! I wouldn’t hesitate to drive cross-country in this car! As a respected Ebay seller with many, many satisfied online buyers, I want you to bid with confidence knowing that this Mercedes runs and drives as it should AND that it is being properly represented to you! Please don’t be upset if I miss a few minor flaws or some small issue comes up on the car. NO used vehicle is ever perfect. Having said that, I won’t hesitate to drive this excellent Mercedes cross-country today!
Please check the photos over closely and call me with any questions BEFORE you place a bid! You’re encouraged to stop by, inspect the car at my Auburn, WA warehouse and take it for a test drive. As always, it is being sold “as-is, where-is” with a clean, free & clear Washington State title. Because of the amount of money involved with a vehicle purchase, I reserve the right to cancel your bid if you have any negative feedback. I also ask that potential bidders with a feedback rating of five or fewer transactions on Ebay contact me before placing their bid. Please feel free to contact me directly thru Ebay’s system or, as outlined above, call me at 206/914-1173 anytime. My name is MARK THOMPSON.
A Few Additional Terms and Conditions:
A nonrefundable $500 deposit is due within 48 hours of the auction’s end. We can accept PAYPAL, but only for the deposit amount because of the high fees they charge. The balance is due by cash or certified funds within seven business days unless prior arrangements have been made with me. Please remember you are bidding to buy and I fully expect the winning bidder to fulfill their Ebay contract! You’re not bidding to hold or then come inspect and test-drive the vehicle later -- You’re more than welcome to do this before the auction ends.
If you do decide to have theBenz shipped home, there are numerous vehicle transportcompanies to choose from. We ship vehicles regularly and I'd suggest that you get a transport bid from Dependable Auto Shippers (DAS). They're Ebay's preferred transporter and will give you a fair quote. Call them directly at (888)817-6203. Give the rep my affiliate number (2362642) and they can pull up all our information for door-to-door or even station-to-station prices.
As an alternative, you might also get bids from the U-Ship.com website. You’ll be able to choose a transport broker from multiple offers. The zip code for pick-up would be 98032 (Auburn, Washington). If you’re on (or near) the west coast, I do have a transporter we frequently use for Washington, Oregon and California buyers. As always, the shipping of the vehicle and company chosen are the responsibility of the BUYER.
TheMercedes can be stored free of charge at my location for up to two weeks after the auction ends assuming full payment has been received. After that period storage is $20 per day.
