This 1971 Mercedes-Benz 280SL was proudly driven every summer since the car was purchased by the current owner in 1994, the motor was subsequently received an extensive mechanical restoration. Work included overhauling the Matching Numbers injected 2.8-liter inline-six and Matching Numbers 4-speed transmission. Finished in Papyrus White (717) over Blue MB-Tex, this W113 has been driven fewer than 68,000 miles and 8,000 miles since the mechanical work in 95. It is offered with a Midnight Blue Pagoda hardtop, owner’s manual, a factory tool kit, Copy MB data card, and a clean Maryland title.
The car was repainted in its original color before the previous owner’s acquisition back in the eighties, and the hardtop is original and untouched. The exterior is shown from multiple angles in the gallery below, including closeups of the fender notches and original Spot welds under the hood. Stamping pictured on the hood and boot cover correspond with the body number listed on the data card.
Factory 14” steel wheels with chrome covers, and the color-matched centers are original. A new dark blue soft top was installed back in 2002 and the top is shown both raised and lowered in the gallery below.
The cabin is original and untouched with factory Blue MB-Tex upholstery, matching loop carpet, door panels and dashboard. The car has factory air conditioning (582) and is missing the AC compressor.
The car has the original Becker radio (515) with the Factory Hardtop in Midnight Blue (904). The hard top has tears inside the headliner and the hardtop has a small dent and some gouges in exterior Roof area, basically the Hardtop was stored away and never used. However this a factory Rear Window Heated tinted Glass Hardtop (249) and could be restored to new condition and the wood is in good shape.
This car has been excellent summer weekend driver for the past 24 years and is mechanically sound and has passed Vermont Safety Inspection (VSL) every year since 1994 and anything from safely standpoint was replaced, I have included a copy of the VSL most from last year. The paint work is fair with paint chipping, minor door dings, a few minor surface rust spots and overspray under the hood area. This vehicle could be an excellent candidate for restoration or quality paint job would take it to a new level, as this is matching number 280SL where only 830 where produced in 1971 as final year of production of Mercedes 280SL.
My original plan was to keep the car and do a window out repaint and sell the car down the road completely redone, However a few Mercedes Benz aficionados suggested that the pure Mercedes Benz buyers would prefer to buy the car in its current condition and restore the car themselves. I’m not are Mercedes Benz 280sl expert I will try to answer your questions but would recommend a PPI as the car has been in my possession since March but has been in my family the past 24 plus years and is superb driver has lots of originality to boot!
The factory data card lists the colors and options, as well as drive train numbers.
The data tag and head casting stamps are shown in the gallery below.
Attached are receipts of the invoices used in the motor rebuild back in 1995.
