1970 Mercedes-Benz 200-Series Additional Info:

1970 model 220 gas in good condition including rebuilding the engine and transmission in 1998 at a cost of $5,700 (I have the documentation) After the rebuild I probably drove the car less than 2,000 miles. I drove it back and forth to my shop 3 miles each way for maybe a year and it has been in my driveway in Southern California ever since. I had many life events that put this car on the back burner but, just a few months ago, a retired auto mechanic helped me get it running again and he was surprised a how well it ran. I drove it a little and could tell it was not accelerating correctly and decided to rebuild the carburetor. During that project, I somehow lost some tiny brass internal parts in my cluttered garage and the project came to a halt. The carb is included but not installed. In 1998 also had the car painted but it has deteriorated over the years as one would expect.I hired an exclusive Mercedes upholstery shop in Burbank Ca to fabricated & install a visually period correct leather interior (it came stock with MB-Tex) which you can see is in very good condition with no rips or other blemishes. As I remember, the leather work was around $4,000. I purchased an off the shelf headliner and had a local shop install it. I think it was made using MB-Tex but, I'm not sure. It is in perfect shape and looks good. While working on the restoration I installed Dynamat sound deadening to the floor & ceiling. I think I spent around $500 on that. It really quieted the ride. The tires have nearly no wear as you can see in the photos. It does need body work on the right rear fender. Someone did a poor job along the way. I think a replacement fender would be the right way to go because the fender has a bulge preventing the side chrome strip from seating right. I also noticed the left front fender has body filler cracks showing through the paint near the front door.I am to old to hang on to this any longer. I'm trying to limit the projects to things I can do and car restoration is not one of them.
My son bought a new van for his wife and has given me her 2009 Scion with the condition the old Mercedes has to go. It's a point of contention between his mom and I so, the Benz will be sold no reserve to the highest bidder.
Somebody looking for a good starting point to restore and enjoy a Classic Benz will find this to be an opportunity. Even someone that needs a pristine interior for their 220 can benefit as well as someone needing a really good engine and transmission. Starting price is $650 with no reserve.
The highlights are:1. Rebuilt engine and transmission2. Pristine leather seats and door panels3. Dynamat sound and vibration reduction material on the the floor and ceiling.4. Tires in like new/old stock condition5. Great condition headliner6. 4 wheel disc brakes7. Air conditioning8. California car. As far as I know, the car has had 4 owners. A doctor in Redding Ca. My friend and his daughter and me.9. The grill was painstakingly restored and I just remembered I purchased new chrome light bezels. 10. Installed radio/tape deck with CD changer with hand held control. Radio has a removable face to prevent theft.11. Engine/trans rebuild documentation. 12. One engine/drive train diagram factory repair manual13. One factory body diagram repair manual14. Title is clear and paid up until September 10th 2019
In case you ask me what I think it might need you buy the car:
  • Rear coil springs for sure. Someone has put spacers to prolong the ride height but they really need to be replaced. The trans axle looks to be in good condition.
  • The body work I mentioned above.
  • New hoses and fuel lines etc.
  • Left rear small window replaced
  • Under hood wiring needs attention
  • Odometer only has 5 digits and reads 57584 but I'm sure, being 49 years old, it has more miles that that.
  • Buyer to arrange transportation. Seller will cooperate with placing the car on a flat level spot for the transport truck to load. I'm on a steep hill and the car does not run! AAA will pull it out of the driveway and take it around the corner. All checks will clear the bank before I release the car.
