1978 MERCEDES BENZ 450 SEL - 4.5 V8 - Automatic - Sunroof - ALL Available Options for this car from factory are on this Car - Including both Transmission and Oil Coolers.
True 2 Owner Car - Quick History on this ALL ORIGINAL TIMEPIECE from what I learned while Buying this Car. Original Owner in Kentucky, a Business Owner himself, drove this 450 SEL off the lot in 1978 and kept it for about 12 Years - that owner put the first original 132,000 Miles on it himself driving locally in Kentucky, and back and forth to his location in Pennsylvania. Then in 1990, they traded it in to a Ford Dealership in Henderson Kentucky.
From 1990 to 1991 it went from that Ford Dealership to a Dealership in Carbondale, Illinois, to a Classic Car Dealership in Tulsa Oklahoma, and finally to a Licensed Classic Car Collector / Seller down here in Ft Worth Texas who had it in his Collection from 1991 until 2014 (23 Years) when I bought it from his Living Estate AUCTION he was having. Last 2 Pictures above show Car in his Private Warehouse along with about 40 other Cars he Collected over the years. He said he drove this Car himself off and on from 1991 until 1997 when health issues kept him from driving up until his death in late 2015. (He had a Stroke which partially paralyzed him) Car has not been Titled since 1988, of which I have the original 2nd Kentucky Title issued to car included in sale, and Car has not been registered since 1990 when it was last sold to the Ford Dealership in Kentucky. Ft Worth Dealer / Collector just kept his Dealer Plate on it when he drove it.
Car sat in Storage untouched from 1997 until my purchase in 2014 (17 Years). Since my Purchase I have dropped the Gas Tank and had it thoroughly cleaned, new Fuel Pump system from rear tank all the way to Manifold, Battery, complete New Plugs - Points - Wires - Rotor - Ignition Coil - Radiator Flush and Coolant - and installed 4 New Period Correct European Touring Tires designed for this type of car.
Car DOES/WILL Run, but will not "Stay" Running. We can get Car started up under hood using the Hand Fueling System (Pumping in Fuel with Gasoline in Condiment Dispenser :) ) and it Purrs like a Kitten when RPM's are up above 800-1000-1200 RPM's.....It just will not STAY Running at Idle. You let your Foot off Gas and RPM's get below 800-500, it stalls. I have never taken this issue to an Experienced Mercedes Mechanic to have it repaired, but the Few I talked with say it's a Common Injector Issue with THESE 4.5 and 6.9 Motors that SIT for a long period of time. They Estimate it to be about a $800 to $1200 Repair - Depends on if its 1-2-3-etc Injectors that needs to be cleared. I just never got around to doing it myself. Plus, NEW Battery I bought when purchased Car needs Charging. Car has been in a Storage Unit for the last year or so. I may/may not have it charged prior to Pickup.
I'd say Car itself is an overall 7/8 out 10. NOT Perfect by any means, but is in Excellent Condition for being 40 Years Old. Minor Blemishes in Paint, could use a Good Buffing to buff out minor scratches here and there. No Rips or Tears in Camel Leather Interior whatsoever. All Electrical Items do work - Power Windows - Sunroof - Stereo - Etc. Again, unbelievable all original 40 Year Old Time Piece here for sale.
Reason I am Selling Car is because I sold MY Business a Year ago, took car out of my Warehouse and put it in storage, am now having Health Issues myself and am Liquidating / Downsizing my life also to get rid of all Non-Essentials to free up time to Relax and Travel.
Selling Car AS-IS / NO WARRANTY / NO GUARANTEES - and at a MINIMUM of at Least $1850 - The Starting Bid. I know these 4.5 MB 450 SEL's do not hold the same Value as the 6.9 SEL's do, but this car should fall under the Exemption Class due to how Original EVERYTHING is on this car. Hell, the Original Chrome Trim on this car could possibly bring in the $1800 Minimum I want for someones $10,000 6.9 Project they're working on. :)
