The 230 SL was built to be racing inspired roadster that would show the world inherent Mercedes-Benz build quality, beautiful looks and modern design. It was to be a car that would be in the reach of more enthusiasts than the Iconic Gullwing cars the preceded it. Classic design, Mercedes build and design quality and at a price that was within reach of many more drivers. It was a great combination.
This beautiful example is one of only 6,911 built in 1964. It is a European model with both soft and removable hard tops. It was purchased in Italy and has remained in the same family since it was shipped to the US in 1983. The car was adapted to US specifications upon arrival but all of the parts that were changed out are still with the car and convey. Upgrades such as electronic ignition, aftermarket air conditioning and modern stereo and speakers make this car a pleasure to own and enjoy. The “Pagoda” hard top gives two options for whatever season you are in. Hard for the cold months and soft for the warm “top down” times of the year.
This car has been nicely maintained and is a pleasure to drive. Mercedes was ahead of the curve with this car and gave it Bosch Fuel Injection, front disc brakes and independent front and rear suspension with coil springs. This car is in very nice original condition and can be driven with confidence and enjoyed for many years to come.
