It was the quintessential European luxury sedan of its day, Mercedes' flagship, and an unabashed status symbol conveying the unmistakable message that whomever sat behind the wheel was doing well. But the Mercedes 500 line was no automotive empty suit. Its manufacturer took the driving experience and their engineering efforts very seriously, going to great lengths to pack their cars with a bevy of great features, encompassing both safety and performance, to keep their cars ahead of the pack. These features, as well as an unusually clean exterior, and proportionally low mileage, make this 1990 Mercedes 560SEL a great acquisition for its next lucky owner.
The first thing you're bound to notice is just how good this white exterior looks. It's the original shade the 560 left the factory with and we're inclined to think its clean condition must be the result of a largely sheltered existence, as there are no obvious signs of repainting to keep it looking this good. Of course, there's some luck involved, as well, as a glance at its history report reveals no accidents in its past, a conclusion that's also reinforced by just how level and well-aligned this vintage sedan still is. The customary areas of wear have either largely escaped the ravages of time and the elements, or have been refurbished with consistently correct replacement parts, as the chrome trim is very clean and shows no obvious blemishes, the glass is impressively clear on all four sides and even the rubber seal surrounding the taillights looks nearly new.
Climb inside and you'll see why Mercedes' interiors were such a strong selling point for their cars, as this one is a fine representative of their work - its tan leather surfaces still in great shape and in original configuration. Up front, the bucket seats are very comfortable, showing relatively little wear and sporting bolsters that have yet to splay outward, as you often see in cars of a certain age. In back, the bench seat is in a similarly well-preserved state. Mercedes added a lot of features that were well ahead of their time to make this a comfortable, convenient and safe environment, including power heated seats, a telescoping steering column, power windows and locks, cruise control, and driver and passenger air bags. A Clarion AM/FM/CD player with both Bluetooth and Satellite connectivity sits in place of its original counterpart in the dash, offering a great array of audio options, and a navigation system has also been added to help you reach your destination without hassle. The spacious trunk area in back is lined with clean tan carpeting, with a full-sized spare securely stowed just underneath.
The original fuel-injected 5.6-liter engine sits in the engine bay and still propels this sedan in fine fashion. As it's connected to the also-original 4-speed automatic overdrive transmission, cruising at highway speeds is a low RPM endeavor. Despite its more than 25 years on the road, this 560 still provides a decidedly confidence-inspiring driving experience, with tight steering aided by newly rebuilt linkage and 4-wheel power disc brakes to bring the car to a stop as needed. This perennially appealing and well-preserved luxury sedan sits with a slightly lowered, road-hugging stance on a set of 15" Mercedes Euromeister replica wheels, outfitted with Cooper CSS Ultra radials that still carry nearly all of their tread after only 300 miles of use.
