Background:E420 was purchased new in Michigan by my best friends Mom. He then inherited the car. I purchased from him in 2016. I immediately had all systems checked out.

" Owning both M117 (predecessor) and M119 engines, I will say that the M119 is superior in just about every way to the M117. However, it is also more complex. By superior, I mean that it is generally more reliable, smoother, more efficient, and generates higher output. The M119 was a separate design that was not related to, say, the inline-six M103 and M104 models that MB offered during the time that the M119 was in production.
The M117 was the same -- it was not related to the M110 and M103 inline six engines. A few people I know actually prefer the M117 to the M119. And the M119 is very definitely an evolution of the M117, though it's considerably higher tech. I like both, but if I had to choose I'd have to go with the M119 overall.
The engineers say that the M117 and M119 were engines that were designed more or less as "cost no object" engines by the engineers, rather than the cost-optimized (see above) M113 which had the input of the bean counters to reduce production costs."
"I always found the Car and Driver's volume 36, number 6 December 1990 issue to be a good read for the M119's racing heritage history and its subsequent excellent results in the 1989 Le Mans with three coupes being entered and one wining it all. I do not have the issue my self, I only have the printed article itself and unfortunately do not recall where I got it. Maybe Gsrx or 2phast have it.

"One other element I really appreciate with the M117 (and to a bit lesser degree, the M119) is that neither engine has all that plastic cladding crap around it with the purpose of making the engine bay look "prettier". I like looking at the engine and its components, and everything is readily visible/accessible so that you can tell at a glance if there is a leak or other issue, and where it's coming from, without having to remove all of this plastic first. IMHO it's just extra stuff that will get brittle with heat and age.
I've heard stories of some issues with the M113s too, in terms of reliability of certain components and the like. The owner of the machine shop that did the cylinder heads for me when I rebuilt the top-end of my M117 recently, told me that the M117 and M119 were both the pinnacle of MB V-8 engineering to date, and that the M113s they have coming into the shop for work aren't nearly as physically robust as the earlier engines are.
He advised me not to get a newer engine and to stick with the M117 and M119 as long as I can. I trust what he said, too, as his shop does all of the heavy-rebuild work for all of the MB and BMW dealers in the entire Houston area save for one single MB dealership.
