1973 Mercedes-Benz SL-Class Additional Info:
1973 MERCEDES BENZ 450SL
GENERAL: The 1973 450SL is unique in the sense that they are the only 450SL with the smaller euro front bumpers. The headlights & front turn indicators are also of a different shape, making them more attractive than their successors. The body style, R-107, is a convertible that also has a removable hardtop. Under the hood is a V-8, 275 ci., 4520 cc., water cooled, 4 stroke gas engine.
CONDITION: This automobile has 183,000 miles. At approximately 150,000 miles to now, the car has had major, mechanical work done. Some of it has documentation & some doesn't. The engine runs like new, the transmission shifts smooth & perfectly & the 4 disc brakes stop the car as it did in 1973. Many of these old 450SL's you find are often missing parts here & there as this once did. Now, there is NOTHING missing. The front grill is complete, it has both the hood insulation pad & the hood seal....etc... Now, this car is a "driver", not a "show" car. Also, everything is stock with the exception of 2 upgrades. An Alpine CD player & Ronal R-9 rims. I will break down the good & the bad in categories below:
MECHANICAL: I recently needed to replace a valve & decided to try a shop I had heard was very good. Upon picking up the car, the mechanic wanted to speak to me. He told me he has worked on old Mercedes his whole life & that when he test drove this car it ran & handled better than any old Mercedes he has ever driven! Basically, everything works as it should including the A/C, the back window defroster on the hardtop. The only very small things that do not work are: 1) the clock 2) windshield spray (just needs a valve that broke $10 item).
INTERIOR: The interior is done in Mercedes Bamboo. The seats were just refinished by Voss Automotive so they are brand new. The dash was just recently redone with a hard cover in the color of Mercedes Palomino making it look brand new. The carpet has been removed, washed & repaired looking very nice but not new. The right door panel is perfect, the left door panel has a small piece of matching colored tape covering a small rip, and the lower pocket has been removed in order to slide your feet in & out easier. The center console could use some vinyl paint but that might be done by the time the car sales.
EXTERIOR: The car appears to have NEVER been in an accident. I have moved a magnate around the entire body & there are no signs of any bondo. I have lifted the car and looked under for any signs of damage or rust & have found none. The body lines, the doors, trunk, hood etc.. line up perfectly. There are no dings or body damage at all, not even damage done by opening a door against the car! The chrome is nice, but not new. There is some clouding in some areas, kind of what you would expect from a nice driver. The convertible top is in almost new condition, I don't think it has ever been used. The paint job is the only thing holding this car back at all. From 10 feet away, it looks beautiful, as you can see in the pictures. Very shiny, a soft yellow. But upon closer inspection, you can find some chipping & cracking on the back trunk & a little cracking on the back upper sides. It is fine for a driver but not a show car.
SUMMARY: Basically, you have a very mechanically sound, rust free classic roadster that you can either not put another penny in and drive as is or great start for a show car. The car also has some documentation and also some of the manuals, repair guides, etc.. The tires are like new and you have upgrades on the stereo & rims, both that can be easily converted back to stock if you wanted. If needed, I can help with acquiring auto transportationbut I would not be afraid to drive this car cross country the way it sits. If you have any questions or would like to take a look at this classic up close, please don't hesitate to contact me.
INVESTMENT: According to many classic car articles & websites, the 450SL is primed for a jump in value. Reasons given both the age of the car and the value of the SL models just previous to the 450. The 280, 250 & 230 SL's from the 60's have already risenquite a bit in value. The 300 & 190 of the late 50's are ultra expensive. Of the 450's to have, the 1973 is the first and only with many of the euro options that were stock just before the strict 1974 US laws on safety.
TITLE: The Title is clear & I have in hand. In the state of Nevada, if a shop is to obtain a Title because of non payment, a Rebuilt Title is obtained. That is the case with this car. Back in 2008, the owner had extensive work done & could not make payment to a Reno shop, but, as I say, the Title is clear & in my possession.
PAYMENT: Upon purchase, a $500 nonrefundable deposit is required thru Paypal. The balance can be arranged using cashiers check, cash or personal check (check must clear before you take possession). I am a private seller, not a dealership. I am retired & have plenty of time to help out any way necessary, may it be transportationor other.
