1979 Mercedes-Benz 200-Series Additional Info:
Up for sale is our 1979 Mercedes 200-series 240 Diesel. The car is in excellent mechanical condition. The car has spent its life in Southern California, mostly San Diego while we've owned it, and we shipped it up to our home in Walnut Creek, CA 9 months ago. It has always been a weekend cruiser for us but we no longer have enough room for the Mercedes.
Mechanical: The engine runs strong and has always been extremely reliable. The car has low mileage and the Mercedes inline 4 engine is about the most bullet proof engine available. We change the engine oil every 5,000-7,500 miles depending on how often the car is driven and have addressed any maintenance as needed. We purchased the car with the auxiliary tank in the back, so you can probably drive upwards of 1,000 miles without filling up - we've never tested this! The auxiliary tank sits at the rear of the trunk and was likely installed when the car was new and gas rationing was occurring. It does not have any kind of veggie oil conversion but that is a fairly popular modification on these cars.
Interior: The interior is in excellent condition. The front seats have been recovered as the driver side seat was beginning to show wear. The top of the rear seats show some wear but are still in great shape. All the buttons inside work. Windows are manual so you don't have to worry about those going out unless your arm gets tired! The original box for the first aid kit is still in the car.
Exterior: There are numerous imperfections that are noticeable close up that have been touched up. The paint could also use a good color sand to bring out the brightness of the color. Its a great color but the paint is getting a bit dull and could probably be brought back to great condition with proper detailing. The tires have plenty of tread left.
To dos: The car would benefit from new syncros in 2nd gear - high rpm shifting into 2nd gear is not as smooth as the other gears, something we don't experience often and don't mind as we shift at a lower rpm but something to be aware of.
