1983 Mercedes Benz 380 SL
Purchased in 2011 with 113,875 miles and now having 119,159 miles this iconic car of the 1980s has been a joy to own and drive.
I bought this as a car to keep at the beach house so it was only used in warm weather months. It’s by no means perfect and has paint blemishes, non-working AC and cruise control (I have never tried to fix that), disconnected antenna, but the car has been entirely reliable—whether using it to go to the market or on a 2 hour drive.
Since owning the car I have bought/done the following: new steering box, new steering damper, 4 new Pirelli tires, new front suspension bushings, new catalytic converter, new first stage muffler, new distributor, rotor, spark plugs, valve cover gaskets, transmission fluid, brake fluid, fuel filter, new fuel line, front brakes/discs/pads/calipers/sensors replaced, pulleys cleaned and adjusted, new rear stereo speakers, new window switches, and some other things that I have forgotten.
The car also has a hard top which looks like it was rarely used. There are extras parts included—new hood insulation, door/window seals, filters. The rear muffler is starting to show rust and will need repair at some point ($100 Starla brand will do).
Compared to other makes and models it’s amazing the quality that Mercedes Benz put into these vehicles. People compliment the car every time I’m out with it. It has that “old money” look. This is a solid vehicle. I hate to sell it but I have run out of room and it must go to the next owner. Maybe you?
