Background:Introduced in 1936, the Type 230 was fourth in a series of Hans Nibel designs that would form the mainstay of Mercedes-Benz production in the German recession of the mid-1930s. Conservative in appearance, the W143 chassis features a box-section frame and independent suspension at all four corners. The Type 230 is propelled by a 2.3-litre, 55bhp side-valve inline six mated to a four speed synchromesh transmission, and safely stopped by four-wheel hydraulic brakes. The combination set new standards of ride comfort and safety. Available as a sedan, limousine, cabriolet and roadster, the W143 employed two different chassis designs; a box-section frame for long-wheelbase tourers and limousines and an oval-tube backbone short-chassis cars. The successful implementation of this compact and economical vehicle constructed to Mercedes-Benz's traditionally high standards suited the prevailing market conditions. Production ceased in 1939 after 24,500 Type 230s of all variations had been built.
