1991 Mercedes-Benz 300-Series Additional Info:
Up for sale is our 91' Mercedes Benz 300E W124. This vehicle has largely been driven by my wife for the past 13 years and 173,000 miles. It has always been owned and stored in the south and away from beaches. The vehicle was maintained by her father who was an engine builder and technician for the famous Brumos racing team here in Jacksonville, Florida.
This vehicle has provided us with many years and miles of great service. The car is overall in very good shape for its age and mileage. These old Mercedes Benz are famous for their durability and the high mileages they achieve. This car is currently still used as a daily driver and I am confident the next owner can continue to use it as such. To be cliche, they don't make them like this anymore. This car, even to this day, still has a presence about it when you see it driving down the road or sitting in a parking lot that new cars and even newer Mercedes Benz can't achieve. We have strived over the years to keep this vehicle in good condition and I believe it shows. That being said, please keep in mind that this is a 25 year old 278,xxx mile vehicle. I chose the photos carefully to try and highlight the fantastic shape this vehicle is in, but also show the imperfections that are inevitable on a car of this age and mileage.
Interior:
The interior is in remarkable shape for a 278k mile vehicle and we constantly get compliments on its condition. Most of the interior is original with the exception of the drivers seat bottom leather which was replaced a few years ago with a used replacement. The cup holders and floor mats have been replaced over the years due to normal use. The wood trim is largely in good shape with some cracking in the lacquer.
It has an Alpine CD player with an auxiliary connection ran to the tray between the front seats. The speakers were upgraded a few years ago. I don't recall the brand, I believe Kenwood or Alpine. The trunk is wired for a small subwoofer. The speakers combined with a small subwoofer provide a fantastic sounding stereo.
Mostly everything on the interior is in great working condition. Recently the sunroof and high beams have stopped working. I am pretty sure the sunroof will be fixed with a simple switch and the high beams will be fixed with a new combination switch(turn signal/wiper/high beam stalk). Other than those two items everything else works including all the functions of both power seats, all the power windows and the power door locks and the AC.
Exterior:
The exterior is in great shape with the exception of the trunk lid and the right rear quarter panel. The vehicle was involved in a rear end accident in June of 2009, when the car was repainted the clear coat did not stand the test of time. The clear coat has peeled from the trunk and started on the right rear quarter panel recently. These are the only panels on the vehicle that are not original paint. The rest of the vehicle's original paint is in great shape and has been regularly waxed to keep its luster. The lower body's cladding is in good shape other than the paint on the plugs for the jack points. On the front right corner of the sunroof is the only spot of rust I know of. I included a close up photo of the rust.
Other than the clear coat on the rear panels I mentioned, the body and paint is free of any major defects. There are some minor dings and chips here and there, but nothing that is very noticeable. The rear bumper has a few cracks in the plastic from age. The front end, mainly the bumper, does have evidence of chips from highway driving over the years.
All of the lights work with the exception of the high beams, which was noted in the interior description. The power antenna was broken a few years ago, and due to the fact that I rarely listen to the radio I have not replaced it. The mono wiper works perfectly.
The tires are Michelins with 6/32nds on all tires. The car comes with the 16" CLK wheels shown.
Engine/Transmission:
The engine and transmission are both original to the car. The engine idles and drives smooth. Sometimes it will have a rough start, but will start right up the second time. The engine has oil changes every 5k miles with fully synthetic Mobile 1. Because of the high mileage of the motor it does consume about a quart between oil changes. The belt driven air pump has been removed and bypassed when the bearings failed a few years ago. This has not affected the drive ability of the vehicle. The alternator was replaced about two years ago. I have a new radiator that I have not installed. The current radiator has a very minor crack in the drivers side end tank that has not spread and I don't usually have to add coolant between oil changes, so I have not worried about replacing it yet.
The transmission has had fluid/filter changes through out the life of the vehicle approximately every 30k miles. The driveshaft flex disc was replaced around 239k miles. There is a delay when shifting to reverse. Shifting to drive has no delay and all forward gears work properly.
