I'd like to present my 1994 Mazda Miata M-Edition. I bought this car new from Roger Beasley Mazda in Austin Texas on Saturday April 30, 1994. Ayrton Senna lost his life in Imola the next day, so I named the car "Carmen" after another famous Brazilian.
I've loved driving this car every mile, but I'll be 63 next month and it's time to move on. My wife and I plan to move soon, and I'll no longer have a garage in which to keep the Miata.
I want to make something clear up front. After buying the car in Texas and driving it for a year, I moved to Minneapolis where I've lived ever since. That meant taking the car off the road from November through May EVERY year. Suspend the insurance, cover with a blanket, keep the battery charged, start the car to warm and circulate the oil. The whole megillah. So when I tell you it has never felt a snowflake or a salt crystal, I ain't kidding.
This 1994 Miata is painted in Montego Blue, which was that year's M-Edition color. Total Miata production in 1994 was 39,623 vehicles including 3,000 M-Edition Miatas with the special paint that "flops" from blue to green or back again depending on the angle at which you're looking at the car. Early on when I owned the car I'd get questions from passengers in other cars or pedestrians who took notice of my Miata's striking paint job and would basically ask, "what color is that car, really?" Very cool.
Let's talk about the real condition of the car today. I stand by what I wrote earlier about condition: my Miata's in excellent condition...for a 30-year-old car. It has a little "garage rash" here and there as I noted earlier and as you can see in the photos. The clutch squeaks a little shortly after starting but goes away after a few minutes/miles. I had it checked and it isn't binding. The rear window is in decent condition with no cracks or tears. I always unzipped the rear window before lowering the convertible top and that has served both the top and the window well.
Last October, just before storing the car for the Winter, I had the exterior professionally detailed. Since I knew then I was planning to sell the car in the Spring (now), I took all the photos then because I knew I couldn't pull it out into a snowy driveway for that purpose.
Let's talk about maintenance. Overall all this car has ever required are oil changes and a new battery every 3-4 years. Looking at my logbook, here are some recent actions:
May 25, 2023: Timing belt replaced and the usual related work, such as a new water pump, serpentine belt, tensioner spring, relevant gaskets, etc. Oil change and filter too. All work done by my local Twin Cities Mazda dealer. The first timing belt worked fine for 29 years so you should be good-to-go.
April 27, 2023: New OEM battery from same dealership.
July 31, 2019 4 new tires ("Cooper Evolution Touring") mounted, balanced and aligned. Valve cover gasket (was weeping) replaced along with the PVC valve. Work done by a trusted independent shop I've used since moving here.
Prior to that was pretty much just batteries and oil. As a testament to how much use the car has gotten over the years, the brake pads and the wiper blades are original.
The car does not come with the optional hard top. Didn't choose that option when I bought the car.
The car does come with a Mazda OEM Montego Blue (paint code: M8) paint touch-up kit, which I purchased last year.
The car also comes with the Monroney window sticker (see photo) and the owner's manual.
The M-Edition package included the special paint, Nardi wood shift knob and hand brake handle, polished 7-spoke alloy wheels, AC, Stainless steel door sill plates, custom floor mats with "M-Edition" lettering, plus other "A" and "B" package options including power steering, leather-wrapped steering wheel, power mirrors, Torsen limited-slip differential, cruise control, power windows, headrest speakers, power radio antenna.
Well that's it. Hope I covered everything. Don't hesitate to ask questions during the auction. Best e-mail is barry_randall@prodigy.net
