1993 Mazda RX-7 Twin Turbo 5spd Additional Info:
I am selling our 1993 Mazda RX7 twin-turbo with a 5 speed manual transmission. It is garage-kept, accident-free and has only 55,106 original miles on the clock. The car is a base model and has power windows, A/C, cruise control, no sunroof, and a front stabilizer bar and rear spoiler from an R1.
I have spent many hours restoring various aspects of the car over the past year. The car is pretty much stock, with the exception of the ESR wheels and the upgraded Becker Bluetooth radio, most other updates are strictly related to reliability improvements under the hood, plus tons of recent maintenance. I have a folder full of receipts of all the parts. Here is a list of the limited upgrades:
- ESR SR08 18" wheels in Bronze finish - staggered (9" front, 10" rears)
- Brand new Sumitomo HTR Z III tires, 265/35ZR18 in the back and 235/40ZR18 in the front
- Apexi Air Intake system with metal mesh air filters
- OEM Front Stabilizer bar and rear spoiler from an R1
- Becker 7824 CD player with navigation capabilities + Bluetooth handsfree package and Bluetooth music streaming + aux cable. Upgraded the stock speakers to JBL/Boston Acoustics
- Boost and oil temp gauge in place of center speaker
- An alarm with remote
Wheels and tires have less than 150 miles on them since new.
I've spent a ridiculous amount of time making everything under the hood look good and perform well. Most notably, the entire vacuum system, aka "rat's nest" has been rebuilt using HPS 3mm silicone. A lot of preventive maintenance was also done, here is a partial list of all work performed:
- Rebuilt "Rat's Nest"
- Cooling system reliability improvements: new water pump, thermostat, intake manifold and TB gaskets, IACV gasket (all original Mazda parts). Replaced the thermoswitch with an FC unit, which turns the aux fans on a bit earlier (95F vs the stock 108F). All coolant hoses were replaced with a HPS silicone kit! Finally, coolant was flushed and fresh coolant/distilled water mix was added.
- NGK ignition wires & plugs
- New Continental V-groove serpentine belts
- Replaced power steering rack boots
- Replaced crush rings on turbo oil supply lines, and gaskets on oil return lines. These commonly leak oil and cause smoke to go up.
- Replaced oil pan gasket & Fresh Mobil 1 oil with Bosch filter
- Refinished all upper aluminum components, including the alternator, air pump, water pump housing, PS pump, upper intake manifold, etc etc. Everything was stripped down to the smallest bolts and washers and re-done. Pulleys and brackets were also refinished, and all nuts/bolts/clamps were either hand-polished or replaced with new stainless steel ones.
- Front crossmember was sandblasted and coated in black bedliner to prevent rock chips from causing it to rust again
- Electrical lines were covered in black mesh shields
- Installed Sylvania ultra-bright halogens and LED parking light bulbs
Aesthetic improvements done:
- Full 3-stage paint correction performed: clayed, polished using a DA buffer and Meguiar's compound, and applied F11 synthetic sealant.
- Refinished faded mirrors and front sway bar
- Wrapped all interior parts that were coated with the factory "rubber coating" with 3M di-noc Carbon Fiber.
- Treated leather seats
- New genuine leather shift and e-brake boots
- RX-8 "rotary" shift knob
- Thoroughly de-greased under the hood, underside, and wheel-wells of car, then water-proofed with silicone spray
- Hand-polished door sills
The audio system was upgraded with a Becker unit, this particular unit was chosen because of its OEM look (even at night, the amber/red closely matches the interior look). I installed a bluetooth hands-free module, complete with a mic and a call button. The system also allows you to stream music over bluetooth, and there is also an AUX cable as a backup. I also custom-wrapped the faceplate of the radio with the same CF wrap as the surrounding console for full visual integration. The radio is pretty advanced and has turn-by-turn navigation capabilities (though not currently installed). The front speakers have been upgraded with 5" JBL units with built-in tweeters, and the rears with 4x6" Boston Acoustics.
Known issues:
- Sometimes the tach doesn't work for the first minute or so when the car is started - it bounces to life as soon as it warms up a little. Common issue.
- A/C system has a leak, but compressor works.
- Some paint fade on the hood and rear hatch, as well as the rear bumper covers, plus a couple of scratches on the rear cover.
Other than that, car is in great shape. Clutch is good, no 5th gear synchro grind, no overheating, good 10-8-10 turbo transition, car is solid and stable. From what I know, the engine and turbos are original.
The car will come with three keys (two need to be cut), a clean title, a folder full of receipts, and some original prints out of magazines that I started collecting that feature the RX-7. I also kept all of the old vacuum hoses from the "Rat's Nest" and coolant hoses in a box for further proof that the work was performed as advertised. I will also throw in some additional OEM Mazda parts (random gaskets, hoses, etc), and some Bosch oil filters. I am a car enthusiast and a lot of love went into this FD, the reason why I decided to sell is because I simply won't have the time to tinker with it anymore in the foreseeable future.
I will not ship the car out, interested parties should come and inspect it in person. However, I will pick you up from O'hare airport, and should you decide not to buy, will drive you back to the airport if you so choose. It's a used car that is over 25 years old and I firmly believe it is something that needs to be seen/driven in person. Call me at 312-883-7553 if you would like to set up a time to see it, it's located in Palatine, IL near the Schaumburg commercial area.
Thank you for looking!
