1987 Maserati Spyder Zagato Additional Info:
For your consideration, I am selling my 1987 Maserati Biturbo Zagato Spyder Convertible, twin turbo V6 engine with a 5 speed manual transmission, with 13K on the odometer! You will be sure to turn heads in this beauty, and will stand out from the other era convertibles (BMWs, Mercedes).
For starters, if you are unfamiliar with Biturbo's, they have an undeserving bad reputation from the earlier carburetor engines. 1987 was the first year they introduced fuel injection, and the later years of Biturbo's are more sought after. The Biturbo convertibles often get confused with the Chrysler TCs by Maserati...and I assure you they are not one in the same. The Biturbo is 100% Maserati, and you will be hard pressed to find one in as good as shape (and lower miles) than this one in the United States. If you need more information about Biturbos:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maserati_Biturbo.
This Biturbo was meticulously cared for (I seriously wash her more than I drive her), with all needed parts purchased from AutoItalia store in Windsor, California. She had a new fuel pump installed 3 years ago, overhauled the breaking system (replaced the master cylinder) with new calipers. New crank sensor, replaced the pinon seal in the rear differential, etc...if you would like to know more, just send me a message! The engine is in great shape and will get you where you need to go in style! The twin turbo engine zooms and the custom exhaust sounds mean. The transmission is in great shape and shifts smoothly! Front turn signals are the Euro version, and the grill housing for the fog lights is custom. You WILL turn heads where ever you go. The beige leather interior/upholstery is in phenomenal shape, and the steering wheel is wood grain...upgraded from the original stock steering wheel! I drive her on the weekends, so the mileage is fluid, sometimes I go down the shore (100 mile round trip), sometimes I just go to the grocery store (about a 3 mile round trip).
Now, aside from all the positives that come with this Biturbo, there are a few quirks with this 30+ year old vehicle. The horn does not work. The AC/Heating system is no longer functioning, but being that it is a convertible, you will likely have the top down so I can almost guarantee you that it won't be an issue for you. The rag top was replaced (and looks great!), but the frames that hold the back glass windows that are attached to the convertible top have become bent over time (very common issue). I have both the glass windows that I removed from the convertible frame. I never drive it around with the top up so unless you need to do so, this will not be an issue for you.
She is currently NJ historic vehicle registered and driven seasonally. I've put over 1000 miles on her, and she has been garage kept since I've acquired her in 2015.
The ONLY "major issue" currently with this vehicle was a snafu thanks to the Somerville DMV. After purchasing the vehicle, I went to title the car and register it at the Somerville DMV since they are one of the DMV stations where you can apply and acquire historic plates (QQ) in person. The previous owner had made a "conspicuous" mark by the odometer reading check box, and as such, I was unaware that the DMV employee subsequently titled the car as having an odometer discrepancy. I contacted the MVC in Trenton and they advised me that I could come down with the previous owner with a signed notarized statement and pay to re-title the car, but on the vehicle history (such as CarFax), it would ALWAYS show that there was an odometer discrepancy, even if the new title was issued showing no odometer discrepancy! If you look at the documented vehicle history regarding titling and registration, you will see the mileage displayed on the odometer is accurate and that this in fact was an error by the Somerville DMV and THERE IS NO ODOMETER DISCREPANCY. The odometer works correctly. The NJ title currently shows an N next to the odometer reading, but the title is clean and ready to go. If this is an issue for you that would prevent you from buying, then I would suggest coming to see engine yourself and make the judgement. The price I am asking takes this into consideration. No documented accident in the vehicle history and you will be hard pressed to find any rust on her.
The black paint on the car is not the original color. This Biturbo was originally yellow. There is standard chipping and scuffs on the new paint from driving her on the road. This can be covered by 3M lining, which would probably be smart if you plan on driving her as much as I did, especially on the highway.
I have tried to be as detailed as possible in this listing, and if you have any questions or want to come check her out in person (car is in New Jersey), please shoot me a message! She starts right up, and she is ready for her next owner to enjoy her as much as I did! Also, please understand my knowledge of the work done on the vehicle has only been since I owned her...I did not paint her, nor do I know anything about the vehicle history other than what is available on the CarFax reports (included in the photos)
Now, if you are interested in this Biturbo (you've read this far so I'm sure you are) you need to be aware of the care and maintenance that classic Italian cars like Maserati's and Ferrari's entail. If you want a 'reliable daily driver', there are plenty of Hondas and Toyotas for sale on eBay. Also, if you want a Maserati that you won't have to "worry about" the maintenance, then a newer Maserati would be up your alley, if you're willing to spend that money!! This Biturbo is in great shape, probably the nicest one you will find, but she will need work and maintenance in the future. That's a given! I have done a lot of work on her since I purchased her, overhauling the brake system for example, that should give the prospective buyer peace of mind. Inasmuch, you are buying the prestige that comes with Maserati ownership when you purchase this Biturbo. When you get the front row parking by the valet service when you go out to dinner or an evening on the town, parked next to much more expensive Mercedes, BMWs, and Porsches, you will understand why you purchased her. And she's a great conversation starter too! If you want more details, just send me a message!
This surely is the nicest Biturbo you will come across here in the US, and if you do find one nicer, they will be asking for much, much more!!! This is your chance to own a wonderful Maserati, especially one that you do not see every day. She needs nothing but another enthusiastic owner who will treat her as well as I did!
