Rare ZF 5-speed with the largest engine (4.9) - 1 of only 39 Made for the US Market
Maserati Classiche Certified - Complete Documentation from Maserati, Modena, Italy
Complete Restoration - Low Mileage 37,057 miles
The Indy was built at the same time as the Ghibli. It was named for Maserati’s two wins at the Indy 500. Production began with a small engine V8 (4.2) and then moved through a 4.7 and culminated with the 4.9. The total production number worldwide of the 4.9 was 300 – with a much smaller subset being sent to the US.
AM11649*1208* has been confirmed as a very early production Indy 4.9. According to Maserati Classiche's Historic Archives it was the 45th 4.9 produced out of 300. Additionally, *1208* is only 1 of 39 sent to the US with the 5-speed ZF manual transmission. When you add in factory air conditioning, power steering, Borrani Dial forged wheels, power windows and a Blaupunkt AM/FM radio (which works properly) - this particular Indy is quite unique and rare. The Classiche documentation tells a story of an April 1971 order of the Indy by Grossman Motor Cars in New York with a production date of September 1971.
This Indy remains matching numbers and Maserati Classiche certified - with all original parts (engine, chassis, gearbox, wheels, steering wheel, console components, radio, original windows, jack and tool kit). This Indy underwent a complete restoration over the last 18 months with over $60,000 spent - including new paint and interior, fresh 205VR14 Michelin XWX on all the wheels including the spare, complete mechanical/engine rebuild, electrical rebuild, refreshed A/C, chrome work, correct exhaust, and much more.
