1956 Lincoln Continental Additional Info:
In 1956 Ford Motor Company introduced the Continental, which was not actually a Lincoln, but an entirely separate, stand-alone brand developed with the simple goal of being the world’s finest luxury automobile. The model, the Mark II, was hand crafted to exacting standards that were specifically meant to exceed those of Rolls Royce.
With sleek, atypically restrained yet imposing styling, the Mark II had a commanding presence, and Continentals found their way into the garages of the likes of Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra, D.W. Eisenhower, the Shah of Iran and Nelson Rockefeller. And, with a base price of almost $10,000 when new – five times the price of an average Ford and half the cost of an average home in 1956, exclusivity was assured. Famously, FoMoCo claimed to have lost $1,000 on every Mk II they sold. Not surprisingly, the experiment lasted just two model years, producing barely 3,000 cars in total.
The Mark II was a statement about having European luxury with American flair. You see it in a design with exceptionally clean sheetmetal that could rival the best of the pre-war French designs balanced with mammoth chrome bumpers that are so well integrated into the design that you barely notice the exhaust under the taillights.
If you are looking at this listing most likely you know everything about this model. This Mark II has been in Arizona for the last 20 years. I bought it from my cousin with big plans of restoring it but I have too many projects to finish already. It is white exterior with blue/white interior. It was running 8 years ago when parked. I had it running 3 months ago but the water pump is froze up. I found a few places that rebuild them from $120-160. I believe cleaning the fuel tank, water pump and new hoses it would be running in no time. The Car has 1 dent on the passenger rear quarter very minor other than that the car is very straight. No rust that I can find anywhere. Paint needs to be buffed and has a few chips on the hood/roof and has a couple spots here and there where the paint isn’t perfect. The interior is all there but needs to be redone. The driver door glass is cracked but I have a new glass with with chrome frame to go back in with it. I have a clean title with lots of documents and pictures to go with it. Also in the pictures in the trunk I have extra taillight lenses, radio, etc. This Mark II is truly a very easy restore for the money compared to others out there because of the condition.
