Up for sale is this gorgeous 1958 Series 1 88" RHD Home Market Land Rover in Bronze Green. 1-owner (me) for last quarter century. the original 2L gas engine (111867348) with a 4 speed manual transmission. Selling after 25 years to put money into my Series 2A and to thin the herd. Winner of People's Choice Class Award at The British Invasion in Stowe in 2004 (plaque comes with vehicle). Featured in Rovers North 2026 calendar (June). Featured on back cover of Rovers North Owner's Guide. Frame and bulkhead are solid (see photos) . Vehicle wear consistent with age. Body and paint have the requisite ripples and scratches that let you know it’s a Series Land Rover.
Serious buyers can come inspect or have vehicle inspected at your expense by a third party. Why do I say this? Because eBay is not the place to buy a vehicle, have it shipped to you across the country, then and only then inspected by you, perhaps rejected by you, all while holding up other potential for sale, holding up seller's money, etc. This happened to me a decade ago selling a Suburban. So, the buyer assumes responsibility to do proper due diligence before purchase. This shouldn't have to be said, of course, but it's a brave new internet world. I have sold a Land Rover Series 3 on eBay and Lanny Clark (renown restorer) was used for a pre purchase inspection by buyer. Vehicle is 15 minutes away from Rovers North, 20 min north of Burlington. BTV is nearest international airport. There are ample world class Land Rover restorers and enthusiasts in area to inspect on your behalf.
New exmoor interior seating ($1000). New Avon TM tires ($1800), new sliding perspex windows, newish exmoor canvas top with side windows. New refurbished Solex 32pbi-2 carb from UK ($750), new SU fuel pump ($300).
Speedometer does not work and gave up the ghost a couple years ago, so mileage indicated on odometer is directional though not accurate. Sold with clean Vermont Title.
Small Issues: Intermittently, when key turned off, red ignition light on dash panel stays on. This would be an issue with the ignition switch itself, perhaps a ground, as all power should be off when the ignition switch is off. A new ignition switch comes with vehicle. Meantime, I have installed a battery cutoff switch on the negative terminal to avoid depletion of battery. Brakes squeak when reversing. New Solex carb could use some fine tuning for a lower idle. Both wipers appear not to be working since I disconnected them to put windscreen down. Fuel gauge also not working, likely sender.
This vehicle is a Series Land Rover that is almost 70 years old. It belongs in a small town, on island, or on someone's farm. It tops out at about 50 mph or so. Speed could be increased with a larger circumference tire on Wolf steel wheels with offset. This is a cool look and one that is increasingly popular by restorers like Cool and Vintage, et al. I like the original look of the Avon's but if I were to do it again I might choose the latter.
