THE CAR

This 1991 Land Rover Defender 90 200 TDI was delivered to the French market and first registered on 20thDecember 1991. The most recent keeper has owned the car since 2007 and undertook a comprehensive mechanical overhaul in August of 2022. The car subsequently passed its French periodic technical inspection favourably on the 9thof September 2022.

Since then, this defender has received a comprehensive cosmetic restoration, which has included a teardown of the body, removal of rear bulkhead and fitment of a bulkhead removal bar, replacement two-piece series style front doors and a new rear Safari door. The entire vehicle was then prepared and re-sprayed in the iconic Land Rover Keswick Green colour. As part of the restoration, new stainless-steel bolts and fixings where used across the car as well as new TD5 strengthened door hinges and new door seals. The bodywork seals and foam gaskets were also replaced along with new glass being fitted throughout the car (including windscreen). The exterior of the Defender has been fitted with black checker plate protection on the wing tops and sills along with Black heavy duty Wolf rims. As well as this, a full LED lighting package with TD5 style side amber indicator repeaters have been used on the car which further enhance its useability. The convertible top is a Sand Exmoor 100% Cotton waterproof 18oz canvas which has been customised to incorporate zip-shut side and rear windows. The traditional rope tiedowns have been replaced with metal stay fast clips which give greater durability and weather resistance. Beneath the canvas hood is a removable custom satin black tubular frame or stick set. The spare wheel has been retained, mounted on a custom-made heavy duty pull away wheel carrier.

The interior of the vehicle has been fully reupholstered with tan leatherette which covers both the front fluted seats, central cubby box, rear door card and upper and lower dash assembly including instrument cluster and panel. The carpet is 100% sisal German box weave and has been designed with matching leatherette edging. Beneath the carpet, the vehicle benefits from sound insulation to reduce road noise. The interior is finally finished with matching tan seatbelts for both front seats and for the rear side bench occupants as well as a beautiful aluminium and teal steering wheel.

Overall, this car really is the perfect summer or beach cruiser and can be purchased just in time for the coming season!

HISTORY OF THE LAND ROVER

The Land Rover Series range was launched in 1948 but the model, now known as the Defender, was launched in 1983 and had a continuous production run for 67 years, finishing in January 2016. The iconic Land Rover design was inspired by the US-built Willys Jeep which had proven it? capabilities during the War. By 1992, after 44 years of Land Rover production, the firm claimed that 70% of all the vehicles ever produced were still in use.

The Defender and Series ranges have had a unique international presence, having been exported, manufactured, and produced under license by a number of other manufacturers and in a variety of markets, such as Australia, Southern and Northern Africa, Turkey, Brazil, Pakistan, and Malaysia.

Following the successful launch of the Range Rover brand to the US in 1987, Land Rover decided to take the plunge into the North American market in 1993. Their aim was to offer an upmarket alternative to the Jeep Wrangler which was popular in America with the more adventurous buyers. The Defenders offered there during the 90?s had to be significantly modified to meet the stringent US Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards. Subsequent amendments to these standards meant that, in 1997, the Defender had to be withdrawn from sale in the North American market as it was no longer economically viable.

Now that these vehicles are old enough, they do not have to meet the same safety standardsand can be imported to North America.
