The late 1960’s saw the emergence of the recreational off-road market led Land Rover to come up with a radically new competitor to the Jeep Wagoneer and the Ford Bronco. Land Rover passed on this challenge to Charles Spencer King, under the project title of “The 100 inch Station Wagon”.
It all started when Rover bought a Bronco and noticed the coiled suspension, this boosted the luxury element as gave improved performance and comfort. He also noted the powerful Buick V8. However, Mr. King gave the Range Rover several unique capabilities, improved carburettors that still fed fuel at extreme angles and the infamous started handle for emergencies.
It was launched in 1970 as “a car for all reasons”. The Range Rover was also the first permanent 4x4 to do over 100mph whilst having a towing capacity of 3.5 metric tons, accommodation for five, hydraulic disc brakes to all wheels and the groundbreaking dual-range, permanent four-wheel drive gear box.
A four door version was introduced in 1981, with the two door version phased out in 1994, it was then named the ‘Classic’ to differentiate from the all new P38a Range Rover.
The CarThis particular example is a 1989 2 door Range Rover, a classic from the late 80s. This one owner, left hand drive vehicle is a genuine factory original 2 door Range Rover, having come off the production line at Solihull. The car is rust free and has never had any welding, nor does it need any. The car is a European import from the dry inland region of Cáceres, Spain and under its single stewardship it has spent its entire life in this central Spanish region, towards the Portuguese border far from the coast.
The car is a very usable classic which will continue to go up in value, as availability becomes forever scarce. The vehicle drives really well and has been well maintained by its single owner, it's in impeccable condition when considered the number of miles its travelled. It has a complete beige interior which is rarely found, having the original rear parcel shelf still in place. The headliner has been replaced by the original owner, this is a common fault amongst these vehicles. The dashboard and steering wheel are in good condition with all accessories functioning properly.
Condition ExteriorOverall, the car is in fantastic original and unmolested condition and the body is comprised of entirely original factory fitted panels that carry its original Eastnor green original paint. However, it has suffered a very minor. dent to the passenger rear quarter along with some small dents the rear tailgate and roof. All can be clearly seen in the gallery. This is a fantastic survivor vehicle and we would encourage any purchaser not to repaint, but rather cherish and enjoy this beautiful original pattern. Once it's gone, it's gone and this has been over 34 years in the making. The car also comes complete with a somewhat rare front bull bar that is accompanied by two yellow rectangular spotlights and supporting dealer fitting certification.
PaintThe car has original paintwork in a Range Rover classic colour, Eastnor Green, with minor imperfections to the bodywork at the back and side.
WheelsThe car has a full set of ‘Rostyle’ wheels showing some signs of age. However look to be carrying their original satin finish. Minor marks are present. The vehicle is complete with 4 Michelin Radial road tyres, with a spare in the boot. All in good usable condition.
SeatsThe seats are in the rarely found beige interior cloth and the bolsters are still firm. The rear bench has experienced moderate usage although all cloth is still intact. Nothing unusual from a car of this age. There is two notable cigarette burns in the passenger and rear bench. However we can confirm the vehicle carries no odour of cigarette smoke.
Steering WheelThe car features the original Range Rover Land Rover two spoke steering wheel.
MechanicalEngineThe engine runs really well for a 2.4 VM and the clutch is positively light and responsive with a very low biting point. From observation the mechanics and engine have been very well looked after by the single owner and there are many new auxiliary parts under the bonnet. All making for a lovely drive in a late 80s 2 Door.
Gear BoxThe Range Rover has the 5-speed manual box with reverse and all the gears change freely without interference. There is no crunching from any synchromesh including reverse.
DocumentationThe accompanying documentation, paperwork and provenance for this vehicle is truly exceptional. The car is accompanied by its original Range Rover Spanish user manual, that illustrates all elements of the vehicle along with the UK dealers and worldwide distributors 1988 sales and service centre book. This identifies all the servicing dealerships worldwide. Alongside this the vehicle is fortunate enough have the original service record book that documents the original delivering dealer that registered the vehicle on 15 November 1989 to Mr Flntanio Rufo Montero from Caceres, along with some service stamps. The car is also accompanied with its original Austin Rover Spanish technical inspection logbook that documents the cars technical specification. This is complete with every state technical inspection from its first test year in 1994 up until February 2019. The car recently passed its latest technical inspection ITV in Spain in February and is in fully compliant roadworthy state until February 2020. The vehicle also comes with a English translated Spanish Carfax report.
