History of the Range RoverThe late 1960’s saw the emergence of the recreational off-road market led Land Rover to come up with a radically new competitor to the Jeep Wagoneer and the Ford Bronco. Land Rover passed on this challenge to Charles Spencer King, under the project title of “The 100inch Station Wagon”.
It all started when Rover bought a Bronco and noticed the coiled suspension, this boosted the luxury element as gave improved performance and comfort. He also noted the powerful Buick V8. However, Mr. King gave the Range Rover several unique capabilities, improved carburetors that still fed fuel at extreme angles and the infamous started handle for emergencies.
It was launched in 1970 as “a car for all reasons”. The Range Rover was also the first permanent 4x4 to do over 100mph whilst having a towing capacity of 3.5 metric tons, accommodation for five, hydraulic disc brakes to all wheels and the groundbreaking dual-range, permanent four-wheel drive gear box.
A four door version was introduced in 1981, with the two door version phased out in 1994, it was then named the ‘Classic’ to differentiate from the all new P38a Range Rover.
The CarThis particular example is an immaculate 1990 2 door Range Rover. The car presents itself very well and has enormous road presence. Having spent the majority of its life in the North of Spain the car is completely rust adverse, it has been fully restored. This is a true time warp vehicle, and upon inspection it will undoubtable bring the feeling of entering a Rover dealership back in the early nineties.
The interior is immaculate; the seats are in fabulous condition with the exception of one small mark on the driver’s seat base. The dash board is unmolested. The boot has a 6-disc Pioneer multichanger. The dashboard, instruments, steering wheel, door cards, and headliner are all in mint condition, and every accessory function’s properly as it rolled of the Solihull production line in March 1990.
The vehicle features a very similar high specification as seen on the 20th Anniversary Range Rover that was released for the French market with a limited run of 200 vehicles in 1990. Features of this Range Rover that are similar to the 20th Anniversary edition include:
·GA Suffix (in the chassis number)
·2.5 VM Turbocharged Diesel replacing the inferior 2.4 VM
·Ventilated front brake disc’s
·Vogue wheels
·Front EFI spoiler with running/fog lights
·Pioneer Sound system with 6-disc Pioneer multichanger
This leads us to believe that it could be a similar special edition for the Spanish market, however we have not been able to confirm.
PaperworkAccompanying the car is a British motor museum heritage certificate, UK MOT, Pending United Kingdom registration documentation/ V5C (not needed for international export)
The original Land Rover Range Rover user manual, in mint condition.
ConditionExterior
The body is comprised of entirely original factory fitted panels. They all have the correct panel gaps and show no signs of corrosion or accident damage.
Paint
The car has received a re-spray in Chamonix white. It is presumed this was undertaken at the same time as the Restoration. There are only two very small body imperfections to note, first on the front right side of bonnet and a second on the near side rear quarter.
Glass
The glass is all original to the vehicle including the tail gate, of which often fail due to corrosion. The tailgate on this vehicle is impeccable The glasshouse is scratch and crack free.
Wheels
Rolling on the Vogue wheels that the 20th Anniversary was built with, these are in very good condition with minimal kerbing. The car is also running 4 recently new Goodyear Wrangler tyres, with a matching spare in the boot.
Seats
The seats are immaculate, with only one small mark on the driver’s seat base and no cracks or imperfections otherwise in the ‘teddy bear’ cloth. The seat bolsters are still firm and the rear bench has been barely used.
Steering wheel
The car features the original Land Rover two spoke steering wheel.
MechanicalEngine
The engine bay houses the original 2.5 VM Diesel Engine and a newly revised turbo is evident. The engine is up to date maintenance wise, with no oil leaks, odd noises or any issues to note, (Engine Number can be gained upon request)
Gear Box
The Range Rover has the 5-speed manual box with Reverse. I can confirm that it is very fluid to use from are road test and shifts precisely.
