The Defender 110 is the Definitive Expedition vehicle. Always the number one choice for adventurers and explorers with its towing ability, massive load capacity, versatile seating for up to seven adults and diesel refinement . When it comes to taking on, and beating, some of the toughest off-road terrain, nothing comes close to Defender. Excellent axle articulation, thanks to independent coil spring suspension, also plays its part in Defender’s legendary ability 655mm for the Defender 110 by helping the wheels to maintain contact with the ground and follow the contours of rough surfaces. There are some things that’ll never need improving. Founded on a lineage stretching back to the debut of the first Land Rover in 1948, the Defender takes pride of place as the toughest vehicle in the Land Rover range. The original Land Rover won instant recognition for its tough versatility and off-road ability. The chassis is one of them. Immensely strong, it is probably the single most important component in Defender’s design architecture and contributes to the vehicle’s strength, versatility, durability and capability. The box section, ladder frame design is far stronger than an open channel design and more adaptable than the unibody design favored by many of its competitors. And there’s the body. It’s tough, with a no-nonsense, functional simplicity and a slab-sided profile that makes it all the more adaptable and enhances configurability. Bolt on accessories such as chequer plates, ladders and expedition roof racks are easily attached. The lightweight aluminium body not only improves fuel consumption, it also increases payload, the vehicle’s capability, and gives an optimum trade-off between form and function. Indeed, the corrosion-resistant aluminium body panels have evolved directly from those on the original 1948 Defender.Even the cargo bed is made of aluminium. So even the cargo bed won’t rust. You can depend on your Defender. PLEASE READ CAREFULLY, SO YOU ARE INFORMED ABOUT DEFENDERS ...THESE ARE REVIEWS BY EXPERTS such as ARKONIK The Defender is a simple machine: there is little to go wrong. However, whilst Land Rover has excelled at creating a machine that is renowned for its longevity (around 70% of all Defenders ever manufactured are still in use today - a statistic that no other mainstream vehicle manufacturer can come close to) there are a number of issues and 'design eccentricities' that you need to be aware of before you decide to commit.Pre 2007 Defenders are noisy, cold in winter, have awful door closing and locking mechanisms, and are prone to letting in a little rain. Defender engines and major mechanical components are reliable, yet many of the 'non essential' technologies (such as heating systems, alarms & immobilisers, and audio equipment etc) cannot compete in quality with most other prestige vehicle brands. You can expect Defender ownership to be a little more 'engaging' compared with your typical Audi or BMW experience.Yet the Defender is a utility vehicle and must be judged as such. It will never be as comfortable, smooth, or quick to start as most of its Japanese competitors, but by gum it will loyally transport you and your family through places that no other vehicle could dream of. And it will do it with nothing but a smile on its grill. At its very worst, the Defender is a labour of love. The Standard is a simple, no-thrills machine. It comes with vinyl seats, a steering wheel, and a gear stick! Although unusual in today's gadget packed auto-design context, a Standard Defender has sparse mod-cons for good reason: there's less to go wrong when you're half way up Kilimanjaro or chest deep in the Euphrates.Unlike the posher, technology-packed Range Rover or Discovery models, Land Rover's Defender model is basically an engine and a couple of seats bolted to a dirty great big steel ladder chassis. Maintenance costs are therefore lower than you might imagine.
