1980 Jeep CJ Additional Info:
1980 Jeep CJ5
For consignment a 1980 variety of the CJ5 production. This example with large tires and wheels, a nice top and interesting interior, has been modified for the rugged trail with a simplified front bumper, and high stance. Grab the tent and let's go climb something outside!
Due to varying emissions control devices being removed, please check with your state, county, local or provincial motor vehicle department to verify the ability to legally register this vehicle in your area***
Exterior
With the iconic Jeep look, the chrome vertical grille with single flanking round headlight on either side, and spring-loaded clipped hood, we are talking about an American Jeep sport utility before the term came to be. Fire engine red is covering this tall tale, and it looks just in great condition but not without some flaws. A few areas of chip off are noted along with invasive rust bubbling seen on the body tub around the rear wheel wells, base of the cowl and rear panel. Black accents like the black canvas removable top with its clear plastic windows, removable doors and chrome front bumper and twin chrome horseshoe rear bumpers give this off-roader the perfect look. 15-inch deep dish chrome wheels are wrapped by knobby 31x10.5L15RT tires all around. Hovering against the tailgate is the full size spare with another bright and shiny chrome wheel.
Interior
Two large high back buckets, which could be the originals, show some as nearly new in a saddle colorway. They flank a large center console/storage area in black with a saddle padded topper and plenty of low pile black carpet covers the floors and some of the center console. The original rear seat matches the front buckets and stretches across the rear cargo area. The dash is red metal with a saddle padded topper and houses the stock Jeep gauges, an AM/FM radio with a CB, and on the passenger side, a saddle "Jesus" bar for those steep ones, where you are in control, but the passenger thinks otherwise! On the other side we see the 3 spoke drilled rally steering wheel protruding from the dash. The top is in nice condition, and the inside of the doors is an extension of the top and presents nicely as well. All weatherproof and a roll bar are also seen inside.
Drivetrain
The original engine sits within a clean engine bay. The engine block and intake show some surface rust mixing in with the AMC blue painted block and head, but hoses and chrome air cleaner cover are in good condition. This original engine is a 258ci inline 6-cylinder engine with a 2-barrel Holley carburetor on top and a Tremec T-176 4-speed manual transmission on back. The rear pumpkin is 3.54 geared and rolls along smoothly and for those sticky spots, pull the lever on the Dana 300 transfer case and engage the 3.54 geared front axle.
Undercarriage
Some road dirt, and a smattering of surface rust is seen underneath. All thought remains structurally sound, in good condition all unremarkable. The transfer case has an accumulation of grease and drip from seepage and some new shocks have been recently put on for the suspension. Speaking of which, its leaf spring suspension all around and drums on back and disc brakes are upfront. A stock replacement muffler is noted for the single exhaust system exhaust and we note the catalytic converter has been removed.
Drive-Ability
A little bit of a climb, but all good once in and I felt safe and secure, particularly in the high back buckets. She fired right up, and it was off to the test track where it had decent acceleration, good stopping, and fine cornering, with no chance of rollover as 60 Minutes reported back in 1985. All worked and was in working condition, save for the reverse lights not lighting and radio not turning on, but there is a nice tire sing when you get it up to cruising speed along with some wind noise.
All good here to grab the groover and go for a rapid ride in some out of the way place. This vehicle can and will do it, with plenty of power, 4WD, knobby tread, and a secure interior you can get wet! A nice condition off roader, on roader, or the daily commute. Jeep or GP, it's good to go.
